More About Coach Derek

I started my coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach for a youth track club in Stockton, California before getting hired by a local high school in Lathrop, California. I spent four years honing my craft before moving north to the Washington, where I got on as an assistant with a two-year school in Auburn, Washington. That same year I also helped with a local youth track club and continued as a private coach for those athletes looking to improve in the off-season. Recently I was named head coach of the Green River College men's and women's track teams.

I was a multi sport athlete in my youth, dabbling in soccer, basketball, baseball, and track. Track was what I fell in love with in high school, and continued to compete at a local two-year in Stockton, California. Not having a throws coach, I spent my time really trying to teach myself the throwing events. I spent three years competing at the collegiate level, earning myself an athlete of the year award in what would be my final year of competition. Post college I've competed openly sporadically and have also taken up heavy athletics at Highland Games events.

Depending on what level package the athlete purchases, they can expect to discuss their athletic goals and what they hope to gain from private coaching. We'll go through a dynamic warm-up followed by drills and technique work. Larger packages will include a more detailed plan written specifically for the athlete to see them improve dramaically.

My daughter really enjoyed her first session with Derek. She stated he was very personable and knowledgeable as well.

Great coach. After first session with my 16 year old son he was able to increase his distance by 10’ with only some pointers on proper release. My son is excited to see what the next session will bring. Coach Derek is very soft spoken, encouraging and easy to take directions from.

Coach Derek did a great job with my two high school-aged kids. He worked on the basics with my freshman thrower and got him ready for his first track season. For my senior, who is already a competitive thrower, he helped her prepare for her final high school season and college throwing. Derek is very responsive to emails, reliable, and always gives feedback. We will likely use him again in the future.
