More About Coach Dawn

Hello, My name is Coach Keys or Coach D,

Below you will find a brief overview of my coaching experience, and knowledge within the sports world. I earned my Master's of Art degree in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Argosy University- Phoenix, AZ. I earned my Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology at Virginia Union University, Richmond, VA.

I have coached, assisted, challenged, and navigated hurdlers and pole-vault student-athletes between the ages of 14-17 in excelling in Cross-Country and Outdoor Track and Field.

I volunteered with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, Studio City Recreation Center as a Head Basketball Coach for “The Rockets” under the Little Jammers Division. There I taught 7 youth athletes (3-4 years) the foundation and basic fundamentals of basketball.

I also interned as a Sport and Exercise Mental Skills Coach for Track and Field at Glendale Community College, Glendale, AZ (NJCAA, ACCAC). In this role, I was responsible for teaching mental growth and relaxation techniques in competition and self-assurance, promoting team cohesiveness and increasing the team’s mental skills training for success in their sports. While working as a sport psychology consultant, my focus was with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and pole-vaulters. The team consisted of 60 athletes (18 to 27 years).

I am originally from the Eastern region of the United States (Maryland). I participated in collegiate sports at Virginia Union University - Richmond, VA (Division II) Cross-country, Track and Field team (Indoor and Outdoor) during my undergraduate years. During my high school years I also ran Cross-country and Track and Field (Indoor/Outdoor). I was a member of the New Wave Track Club, and participated in the 2003 Junior Olympics in Richmond, VA. I also participated in basketball, baseball/softball and bowling with The Boys and Girls Club during my early years. The involvement in such sports equipped me with the knowledge and understanding of sports as well as the demands, requirements and needs for collegiate sport consulting, mentoring, and recruitment.

Throughout my athletic career, I have earned multiple awards and honors. I received a scholarship to attend Virginia Union University (Richmond, VA) for sports and academics. During my collegiate years at Virginia Union University, I earn the "MVP Award" for learning a new field event during season and competing well. I also earn several "Coaches Award" and an "Most Improved Awards" while at Virginia Union University for my hard work and continued dedication to the sport. I received a 3 place medal in the Sprint Medley Relay (I ran anchor leg), a 3 place medal in the open 400m dash, and 2 "Coaches Awards" during my high school year.

I possess the ability to become a navigator for clients, to better assist clients in achieving peak performance, and learning how to better cope with obstacles of life. I understand that no one individual is alike and should not be treated as such. Basically, what works for one client may not work for another.

My first interaction with the client/player would consist of identifying his/her concern. For instance, one client had a goal of vaulting 10’9’’. At the beginning of the season, the client was only capable of clearing 8’. During the middle of the season, the client snapped their pole while transitioning into their “take off” phase of their jump. The breaking of the pole frighten the client very much so, the client was unable to complete any vaults from moving forward. Together, the client and I established a reasonable timeframe and strategies to better assist in completing vaults, and to achieve their goal. We started from the beginning; consistently going over pole vault drills daily at the beginning of practice, and ending practice with drills on the mat. While the client was challenged daily to complete “Figure eight” drills in the pit, I moved at the client’s pace for recovery and rebuilding confidence. At the end of the season, the client was able to clear 11’0’’.

I had another client whose goal was to place first in pole vault and qualify for nationals. This client and I established appropriate goals and timeframe to achieve this goal. Through consistent work on confidence building and focus techniques, the client qualified for nationals and placed second overall in the pole vault.

By addressing the specific needs of my client(s) and their ability to perform various skills, I was able to refine my observational and training skills. My goal is to assist and navigate athletes in excelling beyond their community athletically, academically, and socially.
