More About Coach Daniel

I am currently the Boys and Girls Junior High Cross Country and Boys Varsity Track and Field Coach at South Decatur High School. I have coached kids from age 6 to age 19 and have had success at both the Junior High and Varsity levels. Starting in the Fall of 2010 I took over the Junior High C.C. program and the first year the Girls won the Mid Hoosier Conference Championship with one Eight Grader, and one Seventh Grader and 3 sixth graders. The over all winner of the meet was my eight grade girl who just missed the Conference record. 2011-2013 boys placed 2nd in conference and all three years I had the top runner in the conference. 2014 my number one boys runner placed 2nd in conference. The Boys track and Field is where I am the strongest coaching. From 2011-2015 Our combined record is 104-13. The boys I have coached have been County Champs three years in a row. They have broken multiple school records and I have had at least 3 runners advance to regionals for the past 4 years. This year 2015, we had 14 of the 18 member team advance to regionals.

My strong suites in coaching is 200m,400m,800m and Distance. I also have had success in all three relays 4x100,4x400,4x800.

I competed in High School Track and Field and Cross Country. I was part of the Semi-state qualifying team for South Decatur in 1996, and 1997. I ran the 400m meter dash in High school and 1600 Meter relay. I had great success in the 400 meter running in high 50s and low 51s until got injured my junior year.

I run a progressive style training program. Strength training, plyo's, and flexibility are key to the success in any sport. A daily workout will start with a Drill called Huffins Atlanta Drill which when done correctly will take 35 min. This drill consist of light half mile warm up and plyometrics, and moves into speed drills in order to warm up all the muscles and get the cardiovascular system going. After Atlanta Drill we will focus on what ever event you are training for. Based on the time frame of the event you are training for and the distance the athlete is running will dictate the volume of work you do. The goal is to get the athlete to peak at the right time just not peak at anytime. A typical workout for a 800 meter runner would be, 4- 700/300 meter repeats at 100 percent with no more than a 60% of the time the athlete took to cover the 700 meters. The athlete would then run 300 meters at 70 percent between each 700 meters. Followed by a Cool down of a minimum of a mile. Followed by sit down session to discuss strategy of running the 800.
