More About Coach Chivas

Started quarterback Sophmore - Senior year in South Florida at Atlantic Community High School. Soon made way to Miles College in Birmingham, AL where I started my Freshman year at quarterback. Coached middle school football for the Chattahoochee Jr. Cougars 2010-2012.

As a quarterback in high school, I had the opportunity to start my junior and senior year at Atlantic Community High School in Delray Beach, FL. I ended both seasons 1st Team All County and maintained the Athletic Scholar Award for South Florida Preps. During my high school career I visited multiple camps which left me the ability to learn from the best and brightest coaches and players who have ever played the game of football. I visited the Manning Passing Academy as well as the Darin Slack Quarterback Academy where I received the "Character Award of Excellence". Coach Slack has been a key element in my training as far as fine tuning my own quarterback abilities to teach others proper mechanics. Following my graduation of high school, I received an athletic scholarship to Miles College, a Historically African American Institution, which is located in Birmingham, AL. I soon worked my way into the starting quarterback position as a true freshman, and finished the season Second Team All Conference. After my college career I went on to coach for the Chattahoochee Jr. Cougars of Johns Creek, GA. I have coached within the program for 5 years and finally ended my season as 8th grade head coach. I have always taught and coached with a foundation of discipline, responsibility, and accountability to help young men develop a positive attitude and character. Lessons within football can always be expressed off the field as well, and with all aspects of the game being practiced daily, I find that it is important to apply those same disciplines outside of sports.

It is first important to teach "why" we are performing the drill that is taking place. You must start with the foundation first. No matter what position, whether quarterback, running back, defensive tackle, wide receiver, all positions must start with the feet first. In quarterbacking we will first work on stance. Proper foot placement in receiving the snap, taking a drop (3 step drop, 5 step drop, 7 step drop or play action), and carrying out with the throw. Foot work will be based off multiple repetition drills that will start with 3/4 speed until perfection and understanding is down. From there we will carry on to full speed repetition without throwing. Just making the fundamentals perfect makes a ton of difference, because the smaller details become "second nature". Throwing a football is not just relying on pure arm strength. It requires the feet placement, core strength (hip flexors, abdominals, back, and posterior chain) as well as proper follow through mechanics. All areas have to be developed constantly with repetition concentration at the feet, constant muscle training of core areas, and multiple drills that will fine tune throwing mechanics. The drills that will take place for properly throwing an accurate football with velocity will involve drills that build up into a final product of a full throw. So "piecing together a perfect picture", staring on one knee while only concentrating on the top half of the throwing mechanic structure. There are a series of 5 main drills that can be performed before using the legs. After all drills have been performed and understood, it is then time to incorporate the lower half by teaching the pure basics of using the legs to put forth strength, control, and velocity when finalizing the actual product of throwing a football. The important mindset about quarterback training or any position is the fact that, your "game" is not perfected in a short sprint, but can be described as a marathon. Continuous practice makes perfect.
