More About Coach Chere

I have extensive basketball coaching and player development experience at the high school level, as well as in private skills training. I currently train athletes through a youth basketball training facility, providing individual and small-group instruction focused on skill development, game IQ, conditioning, and overall player growth. My coaching experience includes serving as an Assistant Basketball Coach at both Potomac Senior High School and Woodbridge Senior High School in Prince William County, Virginia.Throughout my career, I have worked primarily with student-athletes ages 8-18, helping players improve their fundamentals, confidence, competitiveness, and understanding of the game. In addition to coaching teams, my work as a basketball trainer has allowed me to develop personalized training plans tailored to athletes of varying skill levels, from beginners to advanced players. I bring years of coaching, mentoring, and athlete development experience, along with the perspective of a former collegiate athlete.

I competed as a collegiate student-athlete at NCAA Division II Glenville State University, where I was part of a highly successful program that won three Mountain East Conference championships during my career. Our team also earned four NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, advancing as far as the Elite Eight. As a coach, I have contributed to successful programs at both Woodbridge Senior High School and Potomac Senior High School. At Woodbridge, our team won a District Championship, finished as the VHSL 6b Regional Runner-Up, and earned a State Tournament semifinal appearance. At Potomac, we captured a District Championship. These experiences have allowed me to develop a strong understanding of player development, creating team culture, and what it takes to compete at a high level.

A typical training session is built around the individual athlete. I start by evaluating their current strengths, areas for improvement, and the role they play or aspire to play on their team. My goal is to enhance what they already do well while developing the skills needed to help them succeed at the next level.Sessions usually begin with ball-handling, footwork, and movement drills to improve coordination, confidence, and athleticism. From there, we focus on game-specific skill development, including shooting, finishing, passing, decision-making, and defensive concepts. Rather than using random drills, I tailor each workout to situations athletes will actually encounter in AAU, travel basketball, middle school, and high school systems.I emphasize teaching players how to read and react within offensive and defensive schemes they are likely to see in real games. This includes understanding spacing, attacking different defensive coverages, making the right basketball decisions, and developing position-specific skills. Every drill is designed to translate directly to game performance. My approach is centered on player growth, confidence, and basketball IQ. I want every athlete to leave a session not only more skilled, but with a better understanding of how to impact the game and be successful within their team's system.
