More About Coach Cecil
I have been a Taekwondo instructor at Temple Hills Community Center in Temple Hills, Maryland (2nd degree black belt) since 2008, and a Judo instructor at Harmony Hall Regional Center in Fort Washington, Maryland (1st degree black belt) since 2013. I have limited knowledge and exposure to: Western Boxing, Shaolin Gung Fu, Pressure Points Fighting, Jujitsu, Escrima (Filipino Stick & Knife Fighting), Yoga, and Okinawan Karate.
I am not opposed to working with anyone ages 3 to 103. However, I do think that private lessons tend to be of more benefit to people who are over the age of 12 because teens and adults, on average, are more focused. That being said, I have trained children as young as 4 in private lessons (parents must be present when students are minors) and have seen positive results as well.
A typical private session with me consists of stretching, warm ups, basic motion drills, learning/reviewing a Taekwondo form, and learning/review Judo techniques. My goal is to teach you to be able to defend yourself standing and on the ground, as well as to have an understanding on how to apply the movements of the forms that you will learn.
Self-defense and recreation are my primary goals for students. Competition is seen as a secondary endeavor, wherever I teach. I may suggest that a student compete at least once in either Taekwondo or Judo before black belt just to get a feel for what a competition is like.
I have achieved 3rd and 2nd place in a few local tournaments for both Karate and Judo, from 1999 to 2012.
