More About Coach Brian

I currently have six years of coaching experience with high school & middle school level cross country, distance & middle distance athletes. For three years I was a volunteer assistant coach at the high school level while simultaneously serving as a head coach for track & field and cross country at middle school. There I established a program that made that campus known as a force to be reckoned with in distance events & cross country. I was awarded Assistant Coach of the Year as well as Middle School Coach of the Month for March/April.

I participated in the USATF Level I Course to gain knowledge primarily on middle distance, distance and cross country running. My goal is to attain the highest level certification (Level III) for these disciplines.

As a coach, I have the added benefit of having been a runner myself at the high school level; this is where my love of running was fostered and I am forever grateful to my former coach and teammates for inspiring me to make running a lifelong sport. My favorite sports were cross country and the 1600-meter run during track season.

As a former athlete & a coach, I understand the importance of utilizing your training time most efficiently. Distance athletes need to spend the limited time they have running which is what a session with me would entail. Before any time or distances are run, we would establish first the longest distance you can easily run without stopping (whether that's distance or minutes) to determine the proper volume for an easy run or a hard session of training (depending on you or your athlete's needs at the present time). Discussing your prior running experience is also essential in determining appropriate workouts & intensities. If you're a pure beginner and are young both in training age and physical age, we would build slowly utilizing mostly easy aerobic running over flat to hilly terrain. I will have your precise paces calculated in advance for each workout, and although I would encourage you to have your own watch, I will provide the timing for you so your focus can be spent on form & breathing. I also pinpoint specific locations that will best help you develop the skills you need to get better. Preparing for Cross Country? Our session would be at a park on grass. Need to build leg strength; I will schedule a session at the best hills in our area to get in that uphill work. Focusing on track? Not only would we be utilizing the facilities, but a track session would be specifically focused on developing that athlete's distance skill (alactic, anaerobic or aerobic) through Tempo running, Interval (V02 Max), Repetitious Running (1600-800 Pace) or flat out sprints to improve top end speed (Alactic).

Client Reviews

I've been at two cross country meets where I have been able to witness Coach Will coaching his runners. I have to say, he is such a standout! There is not much oversight with cross country, and I have seen some coaches take that "season off" and kind of mail it in. However, not with Coach Will. At every meet, he had such focus and enthusiasm! His girls always ran so hard, and it was so obvious that they had been coached! They were so successful, and it's obvious that he had such a huge hand in that! I'm just glad I got to see him in action!
