More About Coach Bobby
I have trained and worked with Quarterbacks and Wide Receivers ranging from middle school athletes to college athletes. I have assisted with private Quarterback trainers in the Minneapolis, MN area and throughout Iowa. I typically work with high school athletes looking to take the time and dedication to become a better player of the game and teammate to help their team excel. I have worked with private Quarterback trainers, high school coaches, and college coaches with clinics and daily workouts to help athletes reach their full potential.
I was a two-time All-Conference college Quarterback, overall MVP of my conference in college, and overall MVP of the 'National Bowl' which has been ranked as a top 5 All-Star bowl game for college seniors. I was offered a preferred walk-on offer as a Quarterback at Iowa State University, which I accepted and redshirted my freshman year of college at Iowa State University. I was a four-year starting college quarterback at Buena Vista University, in which I was voted captain for three seasons. I currently hold 14 school records at Buena Vista University.
A typical session would include on focusing on fundamentals to start off the session because the Quarterback position is a very detailed position in which requires a significant amount of focus on several aspects of your body in order to reach full-potential. After a few reps, I can tell which areas a QB needs to focus on initially in order to maximize their potential. The QB position is an art, it will take several sessions in order to break their habit of their tendencies, so in my sessions I take a few things I want to focus on. This way the quarterback can take the few pointers for the few areas I want to coach them up on and take these pointers home and work on them in between sessions. This allows the QB to not be so overwhelmed with having several things to focus on and not be able to grasp all the different coaching points during every throw they make.
Typical session (beginner):
Warm up
Loosen up their arm and focus on throwing fundamentals
Foot work drills
3-5-7 step drop backs and throwing to various targets (Video Taped)
While I give the athlete a few minutes for a break, I use the videos to coach them up on what we will be focusing on during their workout. By showing the athlete themselves on video, I can point out what they can do better to improve their accuracy, throwing motion/form, throwing power, and stability. The use of video technology is changing the game today, using slow-motion video, I am able to break their motion down frame by frame which gives the athlete the ability to see what areas we will work on for that workout.
Using the results of the film, we will focus on one area and perform various drills to work on breaking the QB's previous techniques and work on teaching them how we will improve their game.
Chalk Talk -- we will take another break and use the break period to do chalk talk and talk coverages and routes against these coverages. We will test the QB's knowledge of the game and coach them up to improve their football IQ.
Following chalk talk- we will work on focusing on another pointer/flaw we can work on to improve their form and techniques.
At the end of every workout, I will talk them through a 15-20 minute workout whether it will be in the weight room and work on improving their strength and explosion, in which they can take the various lifts we work in to implement into their own workout in between sessions, which strength coaches who aren't making position specific work outs for their team, will help them become bigger, faster, and stronger. If we don't work on strength training at the end, we will work on a conditioning workout which we will use Quarterback specific movements which will make them a better player/teammate. This will include roll-outs, play actions, and practicing hand-offs/read-options. Many QB's when they do their workouts, don't focus on becoming better at their reads in the run game, this is a major aspect in football games, so why not practice it during their workout? Games include throwing and running the ball so improving their skills in this area, make them that much of a threat to the defenses.
