More About Coach Austin
My experience with coaching and training has been short but insightful thus far. I have worked as a volunteer player/coach for AAU program; Deep 3 in Portland, Oregon. After volunteering for a season, I moved onto coaching boys basketball at a small private Christian school in Damascus Oregon. I started on in 2022 as the JV Head Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach, and moved into the primary Assistant Varsity Coach in 2023. Before my time time as a coach, I played at the highest high school level in the state and went on to play 2 years at a nationally ranked jr. college. During my time throughout high school and college, I volunteered at many camps and worked with youth from the age of 3 to 18. These camps expanded my coaching drive and spurred me on to pursue individual training. On top of these experiences I have taken on a numerous amount of individual players, aging from elementary all the way to high school. Lastly, I have been volunteering my time the last 6 months with pro- trainer DJ Shaw out of Happy Valley, Oregon. DJ has been kind enough to have me help assist him in helping train his clients who range from youth to the NBA. DJ has given me logistical tips on how to go about starting my own training business and how to properly train people of all ages and levels in the game of basketball.
As an athlete I accomplished winning multiple Oregon club ball tournaments with team Deep 3. As part of a large organization called hoop source in Hillsboro Oregon, playing against some of the top collegiate level players from the pacific northwest, Las Vegas, California, and Washington. My freshman year of High School at Damascus Christian School, I was awarded OSAA 1a all second team on a team that went undefeated in the regular season. My Junior year at Sam Barlow High School I was awarded OSAA 6a all honorable mention teams, and my Senior year I was awarded OSAA all second team and finished 5th at state in 2018. I was awarded 2 back-to-back player of the game awards at state in 2018. At the collegiate level, I earned a scholarship for 2 years at Mt. Hood Community College and played on a nationally ranked Juco as a starter in my sophomore year. I was also awarded with a Mt. Hood Conference award for Team Player, and all conference academic honors.
What I focus on with my clients or my players is detailed perfection paired with repetition and real game scenarios. I want to get a lot of reps in once a player has the foundational base of a move, drill, or basketball concept. Creating real game-like competition and building a players game up through a process of focusing on the finer details will enable the player to build confidence and truly get prepared for his/her real live game. Another thing that I like to focus on in training is focusing on what the athletes actual role is on the court, I know this sounds simple but often times players who never get to shoot in a game are seen working on nothing but their three point shot. I want to help the player improve for the sake of their team and coaches, and make that player most effective based on their actual roles will be.
