More About Coach Aria

I am a USATF Level II Certified Coach in the Sprints and Hurdles! I have been coaching for 10 years at the High School and NJCAA Collegiate level. I have been a head coach of two large High School teams, Berkeley High School and Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood, and I have been an Assistant Coach at Laney Community College in Oakland. I work with youth ages 10 and up, High School, and College level athletes. My specialties include; Beginner to elite level hurdle training; speed and technique development; agility and flexibility, explosive power, and foundational training for the 100m-800m,
High-Jump, Long-Jump, and Triple-Jump. I have a huge background in team building and athlete motivation and I believe practice should be a combination of hard work, technical learning, fun, and empowerment.

I competed in Track and Field for 12 consecutive years. I ran the 100m hurdles for UCLA from 2009-2011 before sustaining an injury that paused my career and encouraged me to begin coaching! At UCLA I had the pleasure of working with three legendary coaches; Jeanette Bolden, Bobby Kersey, and Johny Gray. Prior to running at UCLA I ran the 100m, 100m hurdles, and threw the shot and disc for Laney College where I placed 3rd at the NJCAA State meet running a 14.2 in the 100m hurdles. At Laney I trained with the very well respected and talented coach Curtis Taylor, now the championship Sprints coach at the University of Oregon. In high school I did almost everything! I primarily ran the 400, 200, and long jump, but I also competed in both relays, and qualified for the 2007 Junior Olympic Trials throwing the discus!

I believe that optimal technique development is the most important part of running. My sessions will begin with general skill and technique assessments, drill sequences to target proper form and the recruitment of correct muscles, and will conclude with a high intensity component depending on where the athlete is developmentally. Technique first, repetition second, running last. Specific drills will focus on hip flexor strength, proper foot strike, ground contact time, reactive strength, hip alignment, muscle memory, rhythm, and all things related to the development of fast twitch muscle fibers.

Example:

-Warm up (Drills + Static Stretch)
-Injury Prevention Drill Sequence (Example: Hip mobility, calf strength to prevent shin splints)
-Session Theme Related Drill (Example: If the session theme is acceleration mechanics, this drill will prepare athlete to properly execute acceleration and eliminate common mistakes)
-Repetitive Application (Example: Now that the athlete understands how to begin acceleration correctly, this part of the session will be 15-20 short repetitions of accelerations with feedback after each rep.
-Speed/Speed Endurance Workout
-Cool-Down/Stretch

Client Reviews

Aria is extremely knowledgeable and an effective communicator. She had a plan when and waisted no time executing it. Our son was extremely impressed and very happy with the session. I highly recommend her.

Coach Aria was amazing. My daughter has never hurdled before so she broke it down into training drills and making sure she has good form from the start ...my daughter learned a lot.

First session with Aria. It was awesome and already saw improvements.

Coach Betts helped me drop 7 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles in just one season!!! She is great at motivating us and helping us to believe in ourselves. She is also very patient and reminds us to trust the process. Because of her I believe I can run under 15 seconds by next season!
Coach Aria is one of the greatest coaches I've ever had. She genuinely cares about the athletes she trains. She works tirelessly to improve their self confidence, resilience, work ethic, and running/hurdling form. She understands what it means to have a bad day, but does not accept measly excuses under any condition. Overall, Coach Aria is one who gives tough love to all her trainees and wants nothing more than to see them do their personal best.
Coach Betts is the most committed and passionate coach I’ve ever trained with and she has pushed me beyond limits I did not realize I could conquer. Her love and devotion to track is displayed time and time again by her endless efforts to show me my capabilities and strength.
