More About Coach Thomas

I have experience coaching and training student-athletes at both the middle school and high school levels. I have worked with athletes at Decker Middle School as well as high school JV athletes, helping with skill development, conditioning, fundamentals, teamwork, and overall athletic improvement.

Most of my experience has been with middle school and high school age groups, but I am comfortable working with athletes of any age group. I understand how to adjust coaching style based on age, ability level, confidence, and experience. With younger athletes, I focus more on fundamentals, encouragement, discipline, and building good habits. With older athletes, I can place more emphasis on performance, conditioning, accountability, and sport-specific development.

My specific athletic accomplishments are mainly in soccer. I competed at a high level throughout my playing career and earned a Division II opportunity/offer, which showed that my ability was recognized beyond the high school level. I also had the opportunity to play and train abroad at an academy in Málaga, Spain, where I was exposed to a more competitive international training environment and a higher standard of technical development.

I have not competed professionally, but I have trained and competed in serious, high-level soccer environments, including academy-style training and competitive club/high school soccer. Playing abroad in Málaga helped me develop technically, tactically, and mentally because I was surrounded by athletes who took the game seriously every day.

Some of my biggest athletic accomplishments include earning a Division II opportunity, playing internationally in Spain, competing at a high level in soccer, and continuing to return to the sport after injury with a stronger understanding of training, discipline, and injury prevention. These experiences shaped how I approach coaching because I understand both the performance side of athletics and the importance of helping athletes build confidence, consistency, and resilience.

A client can expect a structured, high-energy session that is focused on improving fundamentals, confidence, conditioning, and sport-specific performance. I like to begin each session by briefly checking in with the athlete to understand their goals, current skill level, strengths, weaknesses, and anything they want to improve. From there, I build the session around their needs instead of giving every athlete the exact same workout.

A typical session starts with a dynamic warm-up that includes mobility, light jogging, activation work, and movement preparation to help prevent injury and get the athlete ready to train. After that, I usually move into footwork, agility, coordination, and balance drills. For soccer players, I focus heavily on ball control, first touch, passing technique, dribbling, change of direction, body positioning, and game-like decision-making. I also like to include speed and conditioning work, such as short sprints, cone drills, ladder work, reaction drills, and shuttle runs.

The main part of the session depends on the athlete’s goals. If they need technical work, I may focus on repeated touches, passing accuracy, shooting form, weak foot development, and controlling the ball under pressure. If they need athletic development, I may focus more on acceleration, lateral movement, endurance, strength, explosiveness, and injury-prevention habits. I try to make drills realistic so the athlete understands how the movement or skill applies in an actual game situation.

I also believe in coaching the mental side of sports. I want athletes to build discipline, confidence, effort, and consistency. I give feedback throughout the session, but I also explain why we are doing each drill so the athlete understands the purpose behind the work. At the end of the session, I usually finish with a conditioning challenge, review what improved, and give the athlete simple things to work on before the next session.

Overall, my sessions are organized, challenging, and encouraging. My goal is to help athletes improve their technique, move better, compete harder, and leave each session feeling like they got better.
