More About Coach Terence

I have been coaching youth team basketball in the South Florida area for the past three years. I have supplemented team practices with individual sessions for players interested in further developing their skills.

When coaching, my primary objective is to help the player exceed their potential. I played competitively at the high school and collegiate levels and based on my size and natural talent (or lack thereof), it is fair to say I became a better basketball player than I should have been.

I am able to coach players of all ages, skill levels and positions. However, I prefer to focus on coaching guard play, the 1, 2 and 3 positions, and players that have the drive, work-ethic and passion for the game to play at the college level and earn a college degree.

My specialties include shooting (coming off screens, proper technique, free-throws, etc.), defense (man-to-man, zone, fighting through screens, etc.), conditioning & footwork (stamina, flexibility), ball-handling and strategy (e.g., knowledge of the game.).

A session starts with stretching and warm-up, followed by ball-handling and shooting repetition drills and conditioning. I then spent time on skills and techniques driven by the player’s specific needs for improvement. Initially, the player will often tell me what he/she needs help with and I will work with the player on those items. As I learn more about the player and watch him/her play in competitive situations, I will identify other areas that need improvement to help the player become a more complete and marketable athlete. In addition to drills, sessions may also include discussions regarding teamwork, leadership, basketball strategy, video study and education.

Member of high school basketball that made it to regional playoffs for the first time in 30+ years and member of Division I basketball program.

1. Warm Up / Stretch - This is crucial to avoiding injury and improving performance during the session and long-term.

2. Shooting Drills - Timed shooting drills focusing on taking the most amount of shots during the timeframe. Shots are taken from set areas on the court. Player is encouraged to keep track of how many shots are taken and how many are made. This also simulates game speed situation and improves game-readiness/stamina.

3. Ball Handling - Ball handling drills - both hands, various moves (spin move, crossover, etc.) - dual purpose of improving dribbling and improving speed & stamina.

4. Individual Skill Session - individual drills and instruction based on player input. That is, if a player has specific weaknesses, we will work together on addressing those. As I have the opportunity to see the player in competitive situations, I may identify other areas that we need to focus on during this time.

5. Strategy/Analysis - this is often integrated into #4, but part of my time with the player may be dedicated to discussing basketball strategy, video analysis, technique and homework for the player (I always assign individual homework or other drills that should be done on his/her own time to further improve). This time may also reference items such as performance in the classroom, recruitment approaches and other items that may not be directly related to basketball skill.

6. Cool Down / Conditioning. Final session of intense conditioning, free throws and other high-intensity drills to improve stamina and speed. Light stretching is also part of this. A quick note on stretching - one time, I did nothing but stretch for 6 weeks for 30 mins/day and my vertical and 40 speed increased solely by being more flexible.

Client Reviews

Coach Terrance has done a great job helping my son improve his ball handling, passing, shooting, and footwork. All things that he takes with him to his practices and games... Look forward to his future sessions!

Coach Terence was Great! He showed my son great drills to work on to improve his ball handling, free throws and speed. Covered a lot in one session! Would highly recommend if you are looking to improve your game!

You are such a blessing. John would not stop talking about the session - he really loved it! Both of us were pleased to see you work with him on his flaws and we are excited about watching him improve.
Coach T has coached our son in youth basketball for 5 seasons at the Treasure Coast YMCA. We started out in the 4-6 year old league and now are in the 7-9 year old league. During these seasons, Coach T stressed fundamentals including footwork, dribbling, passing, and body position. Coach T also asks his players to listen during practices and pay attention to how an individual affects the team. He does this all with a great attitude and understands the youth are there to learn and have fun. We have noticed a marked improvement in our son’s skills under Coach T. It is very evident that our son has understood what the coach has been working on as he hustles into proper positions for defense and understands when to pass and when to shoot on offense. More importantly, our son enjoys the game and working with Coach T. In fact, our son tells us that he likes playing because he is on Coach T’s team and he really looks forward to practices and games. Coach T has been a great influence on our son in learning the skills required to succeed in basketball and has given him the motivation to continue playing basketball. He has a lot of fun but is learning at the same time. We would highly recommend Coach T as a basketball coach as his knowledge and dedication are outstanding.
Our son has had the privilege of being coached by Coach T. We have been thrilled with the skills our son has learned and have seen great improvement in his abilities each season. Coach T goes above and beyond what we expect and always trains his players hard, while keeping practice fun.We appreciate Coach T's love of the sport, dedication to train the basics and the kindness and patience he extends to his players. We highly recommend Coach T!
