More About Coach Stephen
Through coaching competitive tournament teams, baseball camps, and private instruction in IL, KY, and TN, I have coached players from all different ages and walks of life. I have over 20 years of experience playing/coaching competitive baseball, and have been trained by MLB ballplayers. My coaching style focuses on developing and honing hitting and fielding mechanics as well as simulating real live baseball situations. This helps make our training fun, but also competitive and game-like. Through development of these mechanics, athletes will learn drills and approaches to hitting and fielding that they can use forever. I strive to raise self-confidence, and teach ballplayers to learn how to teach themselves as they progress through their career. In addition to coaching baseball, I have a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling/Psychology, have taught sport psychology at the collegiate level, and can help players get a psychological edge on the field as well as the physical edge. Perhaps the most important thing I've learned as a player and coach throughout different ages, is that while baseball is a team sport, it's also very much an individual sport as well. A ballplayer will play on many different teams that require different skill sets from them throughout a career. For instance, one year a player may be a shortstop and hit lead off, the next year, the team may need them to play 3rd base and hit clean up. As a private coach, it's my goal to develop ballplayers in such a way that they are at their best and prepared no matter what their next coach or team requires from them next.
I played baseball for over 16 years, from tee-ball to the DII college varsity level at Union University. Was known for having an extremely high fielding percentage as an infielder, (mainly shortstop) and high batting average with the ability to hit to all fields well. This led to many awards including All-Area, All-Conference, and MVP. I trained at the Bulls/Sox training academy in IL, and have had coaching and training from MLB ballplayers. I have experience playing in many different leagues and on different teams (local, travel, high school, prospect camps, college).
What clients can expect to work on and learn in each session:
Overview of hitting concepts:
-The fundamentals of hitting, which can be broken down into a few easy steps
-Getting consistent with hitting line drives and making solid contact
-How to adjust to different pitch locations (inside, outside, high, low)
-How to adjust to and drive (or layoff) off-speed pitches
-How to control which part of the field to hit too (Example: runner on 2nd, nobody out, how to make sure that runner gets to 3rd)
-The mental side of hitting (How to put yourself in the pitcher's shoes and anticipate what they will likely throw next)
Overview of Fielding Concepts:
-Proper throwing mechanics
-Proper fielding mechanics
-How to develop quick feet, smoothly turn double plays, and increase your fielding range
-How to adjust to awkwardly hit ground balls or fly balls
-Develop a stronger arm
-How to play different depths correctly (double-play, deep, halfway in, shallow)

Stephen met with me early in the morning on the weekend. We started with a quick assessment then started running. He kept everything at a pace I could do and worked on areas I could improve. At the end he developed a training regiment to get me ready for my try outs. I would definitely refer Stephen to someone who needed a running coach.

Coach Stephen was great! The drills and things he did with my son were very helpful! They were things others had not done and will be very beneficial in my son's growth! On top of that, the dynamic he had with my son was just overall wonderful! We are looking forward to the next lesson!

Coach Stephen is great! In our first session, he critiqued my running form (as I requested) and ran with me. He wrote up a 16-week training plan for me that builds all the way up to my race.

Coach Stephen was an amazing coach. I am not an athlete but I live to run. I hadn't run in several years. He assessed my fitness level and we came up with a plan I could be proud of. He ran by my side and my first mile was such a victory. He is very motivational, and knowledgeable. He taught me great tips for energy conservation, focus, distance, and helped me adjust my running form.
I purchased my sessions in blocks of three and he was super accommodating. Coach Stephen would be a great fit for all skill levels.
David (CoachUp client)
Great coach, was on time, and dealt with all my questions patiently. Really helped and improved my running form just after one session. I would definitely recommend Coach Stephen to anyone looking to improve their running or with setting goals going into races!
Lynne (Testimonial)
I had one month to train for Kilimanjaro, and contacted Stephen to step up my training. He took me on intense hill workouts and increased my speed and endurance. Stephen built a customized running plan based on my exact needs. A consummate professional, a true athlete, and dedicated to his client’s success. He encouraged me the entire way. When I got to the top of summit at 19,341 ft, head above the clouds, all of that hard work was worth it. I couldn't have done it without him.
