More About Coach Stefanie
I have been coaching athletics (Field Hockey, Basketball, and Lacrosse) for almost 20 years. I have coached Field Hockey most extensively. I have coached youth and recreation teams in the DC and Northern Virginia area for 18 years. I have coached travel club field hockey for 10 years. I was the assistant Varsity and head JV coach at a high school for three years and have been the head Varsity Coach at a high school for eight years. My team at Justice High School won back to back district championships with a combined 2 season record of 29-4. I am Level 1 and 2 certified through USA Field Hockey and I am a teacher with elementary, middle, and high school experience.
In High School (in Connecticut), I was on the Varsity Field Hockey, Basketball, and Track and Field teams and was a three-sport athlete for all four years and captain of all three sports my senior year. I was named all Conference and 2nd team All-State in Field Hockey my senior year and qualified for the Conference, Regional, and State Track Meet in two throwing events (Discus and Javelin).
In college I ran Track and Field and played club Field Hockey. I have also continued playing field hockey with an adult league in the Washington, DC area.
As a Coach I have been named the District Coach of the Year in both 2019 and 2020.
My session plan will vary based on the athlete I am working with - their age, skill level, and experience. However, my general plan begins with a warm-up, stretching and some light cardio. Field Hockey is a sport that depends on its athletes to be in good shape and physically strong so cardio and strength is important.
Then I work on fundamental skills - even the best field hockey athletes need to spend time each day working on dribbling, dodges, and passes.
Next we would play some kind of game or activity. Field Hockey is a fun sport so implementing games as often as possible is important. These games would work on higher level skills and game situations like defense, channeling, air dribbling, aerial skills, and shooting.
Finally I end every session with a cool down and stretch.
