More About Coach Spencer
I have individually trained a few kids between middle school and high school levels. I have trained kids at my high school from first grade and up while I was in college. I have also coached at the high school level as an assistant coach. Following my senior year, I volunteered as an assistant coach for my university. The majority of training or coaching as been middle school and high school level. However, as a point guard I have always been a leader on the floor and helped my teammates with their own skill set at different positions. I have learned all positions of the game and know what it takes to be successful at any position on the court.
I competed at the collegiate level. Iona College and Hawaii Pacific University. I was a starting point guard, captain and Most Outstanding Player (PacWest Championship Tournament) and Player of the game in the Championship Game my senior year.
Sessions are high intensity and mostly focus on agility, ball-handling, defense, finishing around the rim, and mid-range pull-ups.
I normally start with agility and balance and take the focus to finishing around the rim. It is important to know different ways to get the rim but I believe you need multiple finishes so you have different options.
I believe ball-handling is one of the top factors of self-confidence on the court. 1-5 should be able to handle the ball with ease and be able to put the ball on the floor if they need to. I will stress this point and the importance and have a weighed ball to assist with this.
I do try to throw cardio in each workout. Clients need to be able to do everything game speed, and while tired. I normally incorporate free throws, so we know how to knock them down when we are tired.
Defensively I stress anticipation, how to move quicker on your feet which also come from agility drills and figure out their mindset on learning how to defend. YOU NEED TO LEARN YOUR DEFENDER. After a few down and backs, we should know what their tendencies tend to be.
Mindset. What we should be thinking when. Train the mind.
Fundamentals. I just want the fundamentals to be there and the rest will fall into place.
