Thirty years of youth development coaching experience helping youth set and attain life goals using sports and education with a basic blueprint for success. Won 1989 Washington AA men's basketball state championship at Chief Sealth HS. Won JV Seattle metro Championship 1989. Played at four high schools and two colleges for seven coaches including two-time Virginia state championship coach Ron Jenkins of Bayside HS, Two- time Virginia state champion and Virginia High School League Hall of Fame Coach Don Mc Cool of Mount Vernon HS, Dana Altman current University of Oregon coach. Won two state championships one as a player, one as a coach. Won the 1-on-1 Capitol Classic summer camp competition 1981. Attended nation's #1 all time winningest junior college of full scholarship Moberly Area CC, MO. Played on VA #1 Ranked 22-3 1982 Mount Vernon HS team. Played on and was sixth man on 1983 Region XVI (MO) state Champions 31-7 and team that placed 7th in the nation at the NJCAA national tournament. Played on State NJCAA region XVI MO runner up team 1984. Won Washington,Seattle Metro JV championship 20-0 1980. Played all five positions at the college level. Drew 60 charges in 27 games my senior year in college. Became my family's first ever college graduate by earning my basketball scholarship and degree from Grand View College (IA). Played on Seattle Pro Am touring team that visited and played 4 games Colorado 1988. I played 4-6 hours a day from the time I was eight, until I was twenty three, accumulating over 10,000 hours of practice to master my craft and earn my scholarships and championships.
First access players rough competition skill level through various drills. (Middle School, High school, College level drills)
Access players conditioning level. Show player "hands on positioning, footwork and form" including their strengths and weaknesses. Make plan accordingly to build basic basketball skills and self confidence through practice, repetition and preparation. Make their strengths stronger and work with them to minimize their weaknesses. I would show them the things I did myself to play at the college level. Each session would build on the last and the drills would get progressively harder as they show heart and improvement. Note to parents. Some kids just want to play the game for fun and to be with their friends which is fine. Players who want to win, drive for their best and refuse to lose and who have the heart to really challenge themselves will find my style to their liking. I will drive them as hard as they want to be driven within reason. I will always tell the truth and I come from the UNC Coach Dean Smith Coaching tree as my High School Coach Don McCool regularly visited and worked with Coach Smith for over 30 years during the summers. So pressure defense, team play and hard work are my bedrocks of foundation on which to build.
I would make a game plan for their future goals and how to bench-mark attaining them for the required levels they wish to attain.
For most youth a good set of numbers would be: to start at the high school level they will need to invest 5,000 hours of practice. The college level and scholarship level would be 10,000 hours.
The key is to help players understand how to win and out play players with more physical talent and ability than they themselves have, as I did to go 162-67 from 9th grade -college.
