More About Coach Scott

I have worked with athletes my entire career...from beginner of all ages to nationally ranked collegiate and a few players who played professionally. I currently run the tennis program at Hollywood Golf Club in Deal, NJ and have taught in Oregon, Hawaii, California, Australia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. My certifications include: USPTA Head Tester for the PNW, USPTA Elite Pro, USTA High Performance , Sports Science, Umpire and Schools Program Certifications.

As team captain, I played number one singles for Sprague High School's tennis team in Salem, Oregon and some collegiate tennis for the University of Oregon and University of Sydney. I have played exhibition matches with touring pros including Roscoe Tanner and Betsy Nagelson.

I work on both tactical shot making patterns and technique in most all sessions while also focusing on other more specific areas where the student has been struggling: sports psychology, fitness, anticipation, etc.

2013 Work Review Tennis Committee 2013 Annual Report We are pleased to report that half way through the 2013 season, the Tennis Center at Hollywood Golf Club has exploded! Strong performance and great success is evident in all areas of our program. In his second year at HGC, Scott Nagle, our Tennis Director has made it his mission to get more and more members involved. From the youngest, at 2 years old, to our more senior members, no one is outside of his reach. Scott personally reaches out to golf members and new members to encourage them to take a lesson or come to our Thursday Night Social. As a result of his efforts, private lessons are up and a third teaching professional has been hired. Scott has continued to grow the existing programs and events and has created new ones, such as a Junior Travel Team, a Beginners Clinic and a Junior and Senior Club Championship Tournament . . . One of the most exciting aspects of the tennis program this year is our facility. Never before has the Tennis Center looked so good. From small touches such as new pots with flowers, hanging baskets, and umbrellas with lights to our brand new state of the art sub irrigated Har-Tru courts. Courts 7 and 8 have been transformed from an eye sore (dilapidated hard courts) to the feather in our cap with new fencing and windscreens (and coming soon HGC logo on center windscreen.) The remaining finishing touches, including landscaping and new walkway will hopefully be done in the fall. Last year as in the previous year, our tennis pro shop was stocked by the Sport Spot in Shrewsbury as part of a consignment program. This year, Scott took over the entire pro shop operation, from stocking the merchandise to hiring the staff. He brought in a high end Fila clothing line that has been very well received by our members and guests. The tennis shop stocks a full line of Prince sneakers (the world’s top selling tennis shoe) in all junior and adult sizes and Prince racquets. The shop has essential tennis items and fun novelty items as well. In addition, Scott also has the exclusive rights to sell Joma brand clothing. Sales in the Pro Shop are 44% higher this year over last year’s numbers YTD. The youth programs have never had more participation. From the youngest players (2 years old) to the 17 year olds, there are so many different opportunities for players of all ages and levels to get involved. The Little Tykes class is for ages 3 to 7. The enrollment in this class is up 30% over last and a second class has been added. This program has not only introduced tennis to our youngest members but it has also encouraged the parents of these children to take up tennis so they can eventually play as a family. Scott ran two “Pizza Nights” that were very successful with a total of 42 participants. Member’s children were encouraged to bring a guest, ensuring a good time for all and exposing the club to new families. This year a 4-day tennis camp was held that brought out 18 participants. For the first time a Father’s Day Tournament was held that had 8 teams playing for Father/Child Champions. The variety of programs and events for adults at HGC is so abundant and varied that there is literally something for everyone. The men have TNT (Tuesday Night Tennis), which is a high impact clinic with Scott that has an average of 8 players a week. Those members seeking to incorporate a tennis clinic with a good work out come to the cardio clinic on the weekends. Scott has a loyal following of people who look forward to running, hitting and sweating for an hour while listening to upbeat music. For those who are new to tennis, a Beginner’s Clinic was introduced this year on Wednesday mornings. Thursday Night Social Tennis continues to grow and is a highlight of the social tennis experience at HGC. On average 26 people come out on Thursdays to enjoy tennis, cocktails, camaraderie and then dinner. We have had as many as 40 players on a Thursday night and that was before the completion of courts 7 & 8. Over the past several years, the tennis players have transformed Thursday nights at Hollywood. What was once a quiet night without dinner service has quickly become one of the most popular nights with two dining options, an indoor prime rib dinner or outdoor grill with salads. Food sales (not including beverages) are up 47% over last year. The HGC Ladies team, which is comprised of 16 players of varying ability, competes in The Jersey Shore Tennis League in the C division. This is a very structured league that is governed by a board and follows USTA rules. Teams from Eagle Oaks, Trump, Manasquan River Yacht, Monmouth Beach BTC, Spring Lake B&T, among others compete in a 10 weeklong competition. As of August 7, 2013, the HGC Ladies’ Team is currently in first place with only one more match to go. If the team wins, they can challenge the bottom B team in order to move up in the league and possibly create a second team for next year. All of our special events have seen high levels of participation this year. The most popular event of the season is The Ben Miller Tournament on July 4th. For a second year in a row the event was closed out. This year because courts 7 and 8 were not available for play, the event was capped at 34 people. The Member/Member, Mixed Member/Guest and Men’s Member Guest events have seen record participation. The Club Championship Tournament is well under way with many of the matches having already been played. The finals for all categories will be played Labor Day weekend. Members are being encouraged to come out and root for their favorite Men’s Singles, Woman’s singles, Mixed Doubles, Woman’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles finalists. While it is easy to see that court usage is up over last year just by looking at all the activity on the courts on any given day . .. Contrary to popular belief, the tennis season at Hollywood does not end on Labor Day or at the end of September. Last year, as is expected this year, play should continue through November and possibly even into December. To recap, the tennis story at Hollywood Golf Club continues to evolve in a new and exciting direction. The focus is on getting the members of Hollywood, not just the tennis members, but the entire membership to come out and enjoy some aspect of our tennis program. Whether it is for themselves, their spouse, child, grandchild or guest, in keeping with the spirit of getting the whole family to play, the tennis program has something for everyone.
2012 REVIEW The tennis courts of Hollywood have never been busier. This has been a sentiment echoed around the tennis facility during the 2012 season. Our 2012 season began with the hiring of our new Director of Tennis, Scott Nagle. Scott has brought an intoxicating personality along with stellar teaching skills to our tennis program. His enthusiasm has brought players of all ages and skill levels out to enjoy the “Hollywood Tennis Experience”. One of the brightest spots of our 2012 tennis program has been the youth programs. Pizza socials, youth clinics, and parent/child contests are but a few of these great programs. Perhaps one of the greatest classes at Hollywood has to be our very young tennis clinic that has taken hold on Sunday mornings. Come by when you have a chance and watch some of our member’s 3 year olds participate in their weekly tennis clinic. There is nothing like watching the future tennis stars of America in training. Teaching professional Rhonda Costa continues to be a breath of fresh air on the tennis courts with her infectious teaching style and personality. Our “Thursday Night Social Tennis” continues to grow in popularity with as many as 35 players of varying ages and skill levels coming out to enjoy each other’s company and tennis on Thursday evenings. The “Hollywood Tennis Experience” is certainly typified on Thursday Nights when a great majority of the participants stay for dinner after tennis as the camaraderie continues. Our Ladies’ Tennis Team continues to post excellent results in its second year of existence at Hollywood. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays you may see the team hard at work practicing or playing in a highly competitive match against teams from around the area. Our Ladies’ Member/Guest events and Twi-Nights have also continued to thrive in 2012. Our 2012 Tennis Club Championship Tournaments in Gentlemen’s Singles and Doubles, Women’s Singles and Doubles, and Mixed Doubles categories have also seen unprecedented enrollments. With Scott Nagle’s encouragement, many new participants have signed up and tried their hand against the best tennis players Hollywood has to offer. With more and more players finding the tennis courts of Hollywood every year, we see the future of the tennis program brighter than ever and anticipate more new and exciting programs as well as improvements to our facility in 2012.
