More About Coach Ryan

Throughout my baseball career I have always helped out with youth travel teams when I got the chance. I have worked with kids from ages 9 to 18, in levels from travel ball to college athletes. While I was in college, I worked multiple baseball camps at the University of Richmond. Finally, over the last two years I have been doing private hitting and pitching lessons.

I graduated from First Colonial High School in 2011, I was a four-year starter under Scott Stubbe. I received a baseball scholarship to play at the University of Richmond. I was a four year contributor during my college career as a two-way player, which means I hit and pitched. I had a successful career at Richmond, I rank in the top 10 of multiple statical pitching categories. My senior season I was named a 2nd Team All Atlantic 10, ABCA/Rawlings All East Region Team, and 2nd Team VaSID All State Team performer. At the conclusion of my senior year, I signed a professional contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. Since 2015, I have been pitching in the Blue Jays organization.

Whether the session is pitching or hitting, they both start out the same. First I will work with the client in developing a good, repeatable warm up. If it is a hitting lessons, then we will go into a tee work progression. We will do drills, based upon the issues I see in their swing. After the tee work, we will move into front toss. If it is a pitching session, after the warm up we will warm up our arms. I will work them through the throwing progression I learned in the minor leagues, and teach them the throwing drills that helped me succeed. Once their arm's are loose, we will move into towel drills or flat ground work.
The big thing for me, as an instructor, isn't just telling my clients what to do. I want them to feel what they are doing wrong, and understand how to fix that. Baseball is a game of adjustments. The best players have the ability to feel their swing/pitching motion, and know how to make quick adjustments pitch to pitch. So it is important for me for my clients to understand and feel what we are working on.
