More About Coach Richard

Over the past ten years, I have worked with athletes from a every part of the spectrum. I have taught, mentored and trained everyone from special olympic participants, to professionals, and I have loved it all. For a long time I spent a lot of time with high level athletes, both as a player and coach, and I loved it.

But I have really enjoyed getting back to the roots of the game over the past year. Working primarily 6-12 year olds, I have really been able to help them build the foundation they will need if the want to be successful (in life and on the court) down the road.

Washington State University 12'-16'

2x NABC Honors Court selection,
2016 Rob Oviatt Strength and Conditioning Award Recipient
2016 Cougar Athletic Leadership Award Recipient
2016 Steve Gleason Community Service Award Recipient
3rd All-time in Games Played)

THE Bishop O'Dowd High-school 08'-12'
(Four Year Varsity Letter Winner,
2x All-League Selection,
2x NCS Champion,
2x Norcal Champion,
2x League Champion,
broke record for career rebound (then broken by Ivan Rabb))

Oakland Soldier 08'-11'
(#1 in the nation 2010)

For younger athletes, my main goal is to help them build a solid foundation for their career as a student-athlete, in terms of skill, mind and body. In every session, and most importantly, in my work with the family, I aim to continuously develop in all three of those areas.

With being said, there is no standard workout because no athlete is the same and I don't treat my clients like they are. But here are a few things I always focus on with younger athletes.

Skill:
Shooting form, footwork, and basic moves/counters are always first on my agenda.

Body:
Core strength, functional movement, spinal hygiene.

Mind:
Accountability, "Coachability", Basketball IQ

Coach Junior combines fun, intensity and excitement while drilling in the fundamentals of basketball. He has a unique talent to get the most out of Patrick and keep him motivated at the highest levels - not always easy for a six year old. On top of seeing leaps and bounds improvements for Patrick, Coach Junior is always on time and shows consistent dedication to his craft.
Coach Junior is far more than a basketball trainer. He has taught my son, Brandon, the concept of true accountability where every rep matters in every setting. He has come to Brandon’s games on his days off to offer encouragement and determine what skills need further development. Junior has demanded excellence from Brandon to make up any lack in talent with hearts and smarts - and all of this at age 8. He has been a coach, mentor, role model and the single most influential teacher In Brandon’s life.
