I have coached and trained many levels of athletes in basketball. Both male and female athletes. Have coached from female AAU basketball 9-12 yr old. Cyo female basketball. Coached Lytle varsity summer league. I have been apart of the south west summer/fall league varsity and jr varsity. Also been helping with camps taken place at southwest high school. Private individual and group sessions. I have also been a referee for the past 6 years. 5 yr olds - jr varsity games.
Was part of a #1 state ranked varsity team at Lytle, where we won district undefeated three years in a row. My junior season at Lytle I was ranked third in the city of San Antonio 1A-5A in three point percentage at 53%. I also won individual awards at Lytle, MVP, best free throw percentage, golden heart for courage.
All my athletes will open with warm ups and stretching. (Skips, high knees, butt kicks, jump ups, defensive slides, back peddle, footwork drills through a speed ladder.)
Fundamentals is my most important aspect of all training sessions and athletes. All my athletes will also always go through a set of ball handling drills. Both stationary and mobile cone drills. Stationary (ball pounds, windshield wipes, front to back, cross overs, between the legs, behind the back.) Mobile drills include dribbling through a set of cones keeping eyes and heads up to see the court. Two ball dribble drills (again keeping eyes up.) If you can learn to dribble two balls at once, one will become a breeze.
My guards will also go through a lot of off the ball drill. We have to learn to play without the ball since basketball is a team sport the basketball is moving and out of our hands quite a bit. Learn to cut to get open, cut to the basket, set a proper and legal screen, to come off a screen and read our defender to get optimal space for ourselves and our teammates. We will also learn how to correct passing lanes and how to pass into our post correctly. Shooting will be in every session. From learning how to shoot in proper form, along with footwork with each and every situation of shooting.
My post will also go through the ball handling part of my workout. I feel everyone on the court should be able to have some basic aspect of handling the basketball in their game. We will also be working on getting and gaining the best positioning. Learning to work on the block, short corner, elbow, and free throw line extended. Learning how to get correct position is very important in these athletes game. Running the floor, getting into the paint, seal and square up to the basketball. I feel it is very important for my post to have at least one go to move, something every defender must fear/respect. The most basic move to learn is the drop step. Once we have master not only how to use the but, when to use this move we will learn more moves. My sessions not only put you through a physical workout but, I will also test you mentally. Asking how and why we would use those move/drill in a game situation. It is my job to not only show my players drills and techniques but, to also so you how and where you would use these techniques. I pride myself in teaching the game of basketball. These are just small samples of what to expect during a training session.
