More About Coach Mia-Irene
I have many years of experience training athletes. I have trained kids from all over the country, but have spent long periods of time in the DC,MD, VA area, San Diego and Durham, NC. I began my training career in Maryland as a volunteer coach with my childhood club (Bethesda Soccer Club)summer camps. From there, parents of athletes contacted me to facilitate private 1-1 sessions as well as small group sessions. After going off to college, in the periods of time in the summer and winter when I came home from university, I would run sessions as well as large camps. While attending Duke University and playing on the women’s soccer team, my head coach requested that I work as an assistant coach for multiple identification camps over the summers. After college and in my free time while playing professionally for San Diego Wave, I privately trained numerous boys and girls for the duration of my 2 year contract. Typically, I train athletes from 6-18.
Prior to my college and professional career, I was a high school All-American was able to represent the United States on numerous youth national teams from U15 to U20. Collegiately, I played at Duke University. While I was there, my team and I made it to the NCAA tournament every year, a final four and won an ACC regular season title. After my years at Duke, I signed for San Diego Wave FC in its inaugural season where I played with amazing women such as Alex Morgan and Naomi Girma. During my time at the Wave, we made the NWSL playoffs in the first year and in the second season, we won the NWSL regular season championship. After my contract with the Wave, I had the opportunity to play in the French 1st division with Stade de Reims. In my first season, we finished 4th in the league behind only PSG, OL and PFC.
Typically in a session I will begin with 10 minutes of juggling and ball control. This is important for building a players’ first touch which then leads to more confidence on the ball. After this, we will do some passing patterns and dribbling. Following this, I normally go into more position specific drills and finish with anything the athlete is has requested to work more on.
