More About Coach Matthew

I have coached college basketball for the past three years (Men and Women). I've been fortunate to be apart of school history at every school that I've coached at including breaking four year win droughts (FPCC and NWIC), beating the NCAA Division III #3 UT Tyler (SRSU). In addition, I've been blessed to have coached against colleges from different levels such as: NCAA DII and DIII, NAIA DI and DII, NJCAA DI and DII and NWAC. Overall I have a 37-12 head coaching record. Finally, I recently graduated with my master's degree in Health and Human Performance this past May.

In high school, I was the starting point guard for a highly successful South San Antonio High School Team. We went to the UIL Class 4A regional tournament every year (there was not 6A back then)including a trip to the regional finals. We were 3 time 29-4A district champions as well. Some of the awards I received were as follows: 2nd team All State, 1st team Region IV all Region Team (twice), All Greater San Antonio Super Team and 29-4A District MVP (twice).

I then went to Sul Ross State University where I earned the starting point guard spot as a freshman. At the end of the year, I was voted to the All- Freshman team and was 2nd in the voting for freshman of the year.

A client can expect holistic coaching. What do I mean? When I coach teams or individuals, part of the job is to instill a mindset in them so that they can be able to compete at a high level. Not only will we work on the fundamentals of the game but we will also adopt a winning mindset that will enable us to compete at a high level.

From a drills perspective, my expertise is shooting the and ball handling. We will go through a series of shooting drills. If there is something that I see needs improvement (i.e. hitches in the shot, improper footwork) we will fix it. I also spend time teaching strategy and basketball philosophy.
