More About Coach Matthew Dwyer

I have been giving private baseball lessons in the Los Angeles area for the past 6 years. My coaching is based upon the principles I learned while working as a hitting instructor at the Ken Griffey Baseball School. The hitting drills and techniques are second to none, teaching the player correct balance and swing dynamics to provide them with increased bat speed, increased power, and increased contact. I teach the player how to correctly swing the bat and throw there hands to the hitting zone, while simultaneously utilizing correct foot, hip and weight distribution. These are the techniques I have found to be the most helpful in advancing young players skill levels in order for them to succeed at higher levels of play. I utilized these techniques myself as a collegiate player at the University of Cincinnati.

I was a catcher by position and also teach catching techniques as well. Including proper footwork, receiving and framing technique, as well as how to call a game and find the holes in the swings of the opposition. Critical to success learning to pitch to the hitter and take advantage or exploit their weak spots.

I also teach pitching techniques and specialize in developing change ups and split finger fast balls, which when thrown correctly are some of the most deceptive and hardest to hit pitches.

My ex landlord was coaching his son's team some years back and asked me to help them out. I taught them my hitting techniques and drills and all the parents asked for me to return and continue to work with the young teens. I told them if they could master the technique within a 2 year period they would be 4 years ahead of their opponents. The following year they went out and won the entire league and several tournaments.

I have a special ability to quickly identify current incorrect techniques a young player is doing and come up with quick drills to help correct and eliminate it from their swing.

Hitting Instructor Ken Griffey Sr. Baseball School

I like to start by going through the proper techniques, or mechanics for swinging a baseball bat, in order to maximize the hitters ability to create torque with their hands which leads to a faster and more powerful swing, and also creates tremendous bat lag which is good. Bat drag is bad.No ball involved in this just dry swing after hitter has progressed through each trigger point within the baseball swings mechanics. This teaches the hitter trigger stride, locking and loading, correct dynamics within the swing as the bat travels through the hitting zone, on a level plane, once started from the correct hand position that will lead to maximum torque being generated from the hands, the correct techniques for weight transfer, and hip rotation. This creates the foundation for every new student and is the beginning step to developing a professional level baseball swing. This techniques takes diligent practice to develop but once student advances to the stage that allows him or her to utilize it within a live game situation without thinking about it, which also means all timing mechanisms are in sync with the pitcher, the student will be 2 years advanced to any other players in his or her age group. This technique also provides the hitter or student with the ability to keep his or her weight back and learn to hit off speed pitches with power, and eliminates swinging with all arms as weight has already been shifted to front foot. Also this creates the ability for the player to get his or her barrel of the bat down into the area of impact sooner, which will increase the length of their AOI or area of impact. The longer the AOI the easier it is for the player to put the barrel of the bat on the ball. Then i move into tee work, and soft toss work, utilizing specific drills within both these categories that re-emphasize all the techniques learned in the dry swing stage. Further developing and mastering the mechanics that provide the foundation for advancement. Next we will throw live to student from shortened distance and behind cage of course. This again builds on the drills the student has just completed in the tee, and soft toss sessions and allows me to help them to implement the technique into real game situations and starts the process that allows the student to develop the timing mechanisms in accordance to the pitcher.

Catching Session- i start by teaching the student the proper way to setup his or her catchers glove moving the some strings around and loosening or tightening them where need be.

This allows the hinge that is built into the mitt to function naturally, making it easier for the user to catch the ball, and utilize the glove as a frame in attempt to get strikes for his or her pitcher on close pitches that are borderline strike/ball, for example on the black of the plate or slightly outside of it.

Next we move into catching techniques using a tennis ball and bare hand. This teaches the student to have soft hands when receiving the baseball and further develops his or her's ability to frame pitches.

I also begin to implement weight transfer techniques at this stage teaching the student how to shift his or her's weight from one side to the other in attempt to catch or receive the pitch in the middle of their body, which when combined with proper framing techniques it creates a deceptive or illusion almost upon the umpires eyes. This again helps to increase the students ability to steal strikes for his or her's pitcher, which can decide the outcome of the game.

Next we move into live catching techniques utilizing proprietary techniques developed by me in order to further develop the students ability to shift their weight, while simultaneously framing the pitch and maintaining soft hands.

In this stage the student is introduced to catching or receiving, and framing theory where he or she learns the dynamics of this process utilizing the strike zone as a 3D cube.

Again all of these drills enhance the catcher's ability to increase the percentage of borderline pitches that end up being called strikes. Providing their pitcher with favorable pitch counts, and also helps to build trust and dependability between the catcher and his or her's pitchers.

This is a key element that is often overlooked, the catcher's first and foremost job is to take care of his or her's pitching staff, hitting is secondary.

Next we go over throwing mechanics, for throwing out attempting base stealing runners. Then the slide technique for retrieving passed balls.
Then we work on blocking drills for handling or stopping pitches in the dirt. Finally we end with catching theory, going over how to call game, how to find the hitters weak spots, and developing the skills to be the field general.

Awesome coach. His training session was very detailed and thorough. Coach Matt is very patient and kept my son constantly motivated.

Coach Matthew is extremely knowledgeable and very enthusiastic. My 10 year old son was struggling with batting and in one lesson, Coach Matthew was able change his swing mechanics and incorporate using his lower body to drive the ball. The drills he showed us are working really well. My son is now crushing the ball and has his confidence is through the roof. Coach Matthew is amazing and I highly recommend him.

Coach Matthew was GREAT! My son left full of confidence. I am definitely going back again and again. He knows what he's talking about and doing.

Coach Matthew did a great job with our 6 year old son! We saw a huge improvement with his hitting after one lesson! His confidence has increased as well. Coach Matthew is very patient and my son warmed up to him right away. Having that one on one with a knowledgeable coach is just what he needed to get him ready for this upcoming baseball season. I highly recommend him. Five Stars!! Thanks Matt!

beginning players tend to be easier to coach b/c they have so much to learn. But my son is not a beginner but a 15y/o high schooler so I am always concerned when I book a new coach that he will be able to help with advanced problems that experienced players run into
I need not have worried. Coach Matt met my son where he was and coached him from there. He worked on the finer points of his swing and gave him techniques that improved his swing in a way that I could hear. My son was happy as well because they were able to easily talk shop.
Many batting coaches spend a lot of time on the upper body and little attention is paid to the lower half of the swing I think because it's harder to see/coach. Matt got right in there. Improvements were made. i will book Matt again for sure.

Matt is absolutely terrific - exactly what I was looking for for my 10-year old son. My son has always hit well but there was always something slightly wrong with his form, and Matt starts by breaking the swing down into several small steps, with a focus on getting each step correct. My son came away from his session really excited, and immediately asked whether he could continue to work with Matt. I really can't say enough about Matt's techniques - if you have a son or daughter that needs some instruction, Matt is the guy you need to see.

Matthew is a great and dedicated coach, he was very helpful fixing the mechanics in my swing

My son had his first session today and said he definitely learned a lot from Coach Matthew. He said that coach explained ans showed him batting techniques and my son already feels that his batting has improved. Additionally, I should add that scheduling was prompt and Mathew managed to work out an appointment for us even when our availability was not as flexible.

Thoughtful and clearly knowledgable Mathew is great at breaking down a swing and drilling the mechanics. He got my son (8) to improve his swing in just the first session. Highly recommend!

The session I had gave me the fundamentals and basic mechanics to power hit. Matt is the real deal. I have 4 more sessions and I'm pretty sure I will improve more.

He is very patient and you can tell he gets a genuine feeling of satisfaction seeing your child improve. My child absolutely enjoys his sessions with Coach Matthew. He has definitely found his new hitting coach.

Coach Matthew has really helped my six year old with fundamentals. He's patient and thorough. I can see my kid gaining confidence and enjoying himself more as he gets more competent.

Very patient with my 5 year old son! Great communication skills for this age group and breaks the mechanics down so my son can understand. After 3 lessons my son's swing already looks better and more fluid.
I couldn't have asked for a nicer or more knowledgeable coach. Perfect for young kids.

Coach Mathew was very understanding and explained the training in detail. He was patient and was very good at demonstrating the correct method and the wrong way.
I would recommend Mathew to any age.

Did a great Job with our son.

We started with an introduction Session with Coach Matthew. I have coached as a volunteer for many years and I have met many coaches along the way. I have yet to see a coach that knows the key details of the game like Coach Matthew and knows how to positively talk to a young kid. My son has been a good hitter, but I am convinced he will become a great hitter after working with Coach Matt. I believe Coach Matt will be the key part of my son's development. My son and I are looking forward to working with Coach Matt throughout the years!

Coach Matthew is a fantastic coach. He knows more about hitting than pretty much anyone I've ever met. My kid who's 5 is not the easiest kid to work with as he his attention span is pretty short. However coach still gets him through his drills and I can tell he's making progress. I'm sure by the time the season starts he'll be way ahead of a lot of the other kids.

I was very impressed with Coach Matthew’s immense knowledge of Baseball. My 10-year old son learned some great hitting and catching drills. I will definitely be booking more lessons with Matthew. Thanks again Coach!

Coach Mathew was awesome. Even though my daughter is only 9 years old he worked within her limits and showed her techniques that have definitely improved her abilities He really knows what he's doing.

Coach Matt did a great job working with Michael - patient, upbeat and really worked some basics for both catching and hitting. I have no question Michael will be able to use these skills better going forward. Thank you!

Coach Matthew is a very knowledgeable baseball coach. He identified what my son needed work in on his catching & batting and taught him a lot his first session. My son really liked training with him as well and looks for forward to his next lesson. I am very happy I found coach Matthew. I will definitely book him again for future sessions.

Matt has been an excellent in help my son, improve in all areas of Baseball. We started with him to work on catching skills and hitting and have not been disappointed. We have seen vast improvements in sons hitting, catching , throwing and also his over all feel for the game. I would recommend Matt to anyone who is looking to have the child work with a coach. We have been with him for 6 months and will continue to work with him.

Matt is a very knowledgeable coach. At my son's 1st session he quickly identified the problem he was having with his swing, and in a short time has really helped him to improve. Not only has he helped him with his swing but also with his fielding. Matt goes above & beyond in each session. He's given my son drills & advice on exercises to do at home to help him continue to develop. My son has gained more confidence & is becoming a better player thanks to Matt's coaching.

great coach. definitely worth every penny. looking forward to training with in the future.

My son 9 year old son, who has been playing ball since he was 4 had a major crisis of confidence after moving up to the live pitch minors division where he was twice struck by wild pitches early in the season. We worked with Matthew once a week for the rest of the season and my son was able to regain the confidence and perspective he needed to get him through the season. By the end of the season he was back in the box at the plate swinging with confidence thanks to Matthew. Mathew provided excellent, innovative drills that helped my son improve his batting mechanics and provided detailed feedback after each session that I was able to share with my son's team coach.

POST SEASON UPDATE: My Son's team made it to the Championship game in their division. My son finally broke his hitting slump with a single to first. Then his 2nd at bat he hit a line drive double scoring two RBI's, the only points his team scored in the game. Team lost, but my son got the game ball and the respect of his teammates and coaches. Thanks Matthew!
