More About Coach Mathias

As an experienced high school varsity and junior varsity coach, I understand what high school coaches look for in lacrosse players. My goals are to teach players the necessary skills and to prepare them for the required discipline and excellence that every high school coach demands.

Here is my background. I am:

1) The current Diablo Valley College defensive coordinator;
2) A 9-year lacrosse veteran-coach;
3) Experienced coaching NCAA, college club, high school, and youth players;
4) A US Lacrosse Level 1 and Level 2 certified coach;
5) A National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) certified coach;
6) A Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) certified coach;
7) The former San Ramon Raptors advanced U15 head coach;
8) The former Acalanes High School head coach (freshman team);
9) The current Alhambra High School varsity and junior varsity defensive coordinator;
10) Able to teach all levels from beginner to advanced; and
11) Experienced teaching all positions.

Together, we can achieve your lacrosse goals.

Position Experience

While primarily a long pole, I have played every position (attack, midfield, LSM, defense, and goalie) in lacrosse between my high school and college lacrosse experiences. My unique viewpoints allow me to explain the mindsets from every part of the field.

High School Achievements

In 2007, I was a founding member of the Alhambra High School team. At Alhambra, I was the team captain and was nominated for all league, given the Coaches Award for Outstanding Leadership, and was voted the defensive player of the year.

College Achievements

In 2008, I helped start the Diablo Valley College club team. At DVC, I was a team captain, the first vice-president, second president, and achieved the Advisor’s Award for my leadership. Also, I was on the first DVC team to beat Stanford University.
I finished my collegiate lacrosse career at San Jose State University. While playing at San Jose State, our team made our way to the WCLL Division II playoffs where I finished second for highest save percentages in the league.

Most importantly, I have all the equipment a player could need (goals, balls, ladders, mini hurtles, hitting bags, cones, you name it!)

I always tailor my practices around the skill level of the players; my coaching philosophy remains constant.

The coaching philosophy I have embraced revolves around the three life lesson concepts of preparation, discipline, and excellence that I teach through the use of the Positive Coaching Alliance’s “effort, learning, and mistakes are okay” structure (ELM).

My main concern when developing a practice plan is to include life lessons that I teach through lacrosse by emphasizing preparation, discipline, and excellence.

Preparation

When teaching preparation, I intend to display my own preparation by utilizing well-organized practice plans and by providing a high-paced, regimented, and productive practice environment.

Discipline

Discipline is taught through my comprehensive set of team rules. Further, discipline is required to accomplish complex goals in sports and life. I maintain high expectations to help demonstrate the need for discipline.

Excellence

I attempt to reward individuals and team achievements in order to emphasize the importance of excellence. While effort and the above beliefs are crucial to a positive learning environment, players need to be rewarded for the outcomes of their achievements as well as their attempts.

Client Reviews

Thanks for a really educational first session. My son is really looking forward to working with you across the summer and fall. Excellent.

Coach Mat is great! My son loves his sessions and really respects what he tells him. He’s really brought out a passion in my son and it’s because he’s such a kind and patient teacher.

Coach Mathias was great. I originally signed up to give my 13 year old son a heads up when trying a lacrosse summer camp for the first time. I really liked how he started off with the basics and gave him the tools to be able to practice without him. Coach Mathias was always on time and had great patience with my son (who doesn't always show enthusiasm). He was patient and provided good lessons to grow on. I'm happy to say we will be booking more sessions with Coach Matt.

I asked my daughter to rate the training today from a scale of 1-5 (5 being awesome).

Kaely: 5

Mat is an awesome instructor and he has taught my daughter valuable strategies that will be very helpful in the coming years.

My son really enjoyed his session with Coach Mathias. He has been playing for a few seasons, but was still able to pick up new techniques and tweaks that will help his game.

Coach Mathias is fantastic. He provided expert coaching, was flexible and a great communicator with both athlete and parent. Highly recommend for girls as well - all three of my children came away with solid foundational skills and were excited about Lacrosse. We will most certainly continue to call upon Coach Mathias for ongoing training.

Coach Mathias has been great for our 8 year old. Keeps him interested and improving across multiple sessions.

Coach Mathias is a very versatile coach with knowledge of all aspects about the sport. He has a perfect combination of agility, conditioning, and lacrosse strategy. He makes you learn from your mistakes and pushes you past your limits. He is a great coach with a great personality, and I would definitely recommend him as a coach.

My 11 year old son loved his first session with Coach Matt. My son has been sharing all the techniques he learned with us. This was my son's first experience with lacrosse and he loved it - he is looking forward to the next session already.

Matthias does a great job of providing feedback on not only my son is doing well, but also in what areas he can improve.

He's a very strong commicator, and always lets me know when he's arrived to the practice and when he is available for future sessions.

Great way of teaching the mental and physical aspect of the sport.

My son who has been playing lacrosse for 5 years just had his first coaching session with Mathias. He says Mathias' one-on-one training and conditioning techniques are the most intense and gratifying. He looks forward to upcoming sessions.

Mathias, you have been (and continue) to make an impression on our son (and us for that matter)...
