More About Coach Mark

"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to SERVE others at whatever cost" - Arthur Ashe TENNIS - THE SPORT OF A LIFETIME!

Looking to improve your game? The best way to maximize your tennis potential is through skills development. Whether you’re a beginner, club player or a budding champion, I will teach you how to improve your game both on and off the court. My instruction is tailored to your level of play. Using a fluid, skill-based system my instructional methods produce tennis players who are talented and strategic on the court. My approach will help you or your child to master the serve, baseline play, and net play.

Hello, my name is Mark Michel. I learned, as a junior player, the importance of having good mentors and professional tennis instructors. During high school, I developed a strong tournament and match play record. I became the top ranked junior player in the Mid-Atlantic Region by winning the 18 and under Middle Atlantic Lawn Tennis Association (MALTA) Winter Championships. After graduation, I became the only Tennis Player nominated and inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at Bishop O'Connell High School. I received a university tennis scholarship and held the #1 Varsity position from my freshman to my senior year at James Madison University and was ranked among the top 50 in the United States. I also had the privilege of working as an instructor under Peter Burwash in the West Virginia University tennis program after completing my degree. Burwash, a United States Professional Tennis Association Master Professional, has coached many tennis players including Venus Williams and Serena Williams, Greg Rusedski, Andrew Sznajder, and SĂ©bastien Lareau.
My years of experience and competitive play have provided me with the tools to assist you in achieving your tennis goals. If you are looking for a proven instructor or a coach, contact me for an in-person meeting so we can set up your instructional goals and our strategy for achieving them.

Keep it Pure - Tennis for LIFE

I was the top ranked player in the Mid-Atlantic as a Junior in the 18's, 4 Time Virginia State Catholic Champion - Bishop O'Connell, only Tennis Player inducted into the Bishop O'Connell Athletic Hall of Fame, attended James Madison on a Tennis Scholarship, played #1 Singles and Doubles for all for years. Ranked in the top 50 Nationally for Men's Amateur's in United States.

I run each session based on the individual needs the athlete. I am excellent at helping the beginner learn the basics and starting them out with solid fundamentals on which they can build upon with practice. I can help the intermediate player grow through a combination stroke adjustment and match strategy. For the Advanced player I can help them get to the next level through actual match play, strategy discussion, training and work ethics needed to be a champion. Tennis, like in life requires a commitment to excellence and it is only though hard work that we can achieve our potential. I help my student achieve that excellence.

Coach Mark helped me with my technique, especially Forehand and Service. His energy and positivity were amazing ! He understands the true fundamentals of Tennis! If you truly want to improve your game, I highly recommend Mark as coach ! Thanks for the great time Mark ;)

My daughter first lesson with Coach Mark was great, he took his time to explain everything to her.

I have been training with Mark for almost a year now. I have lesson with him every two weeks. I really enjoy the time with him.

He's very professional in tutoring. And he has a lot of patience for the students. He built up my skills not only on hitting the ball, but also on the strategy of the game. He's teaching me how to have fun by playing tennis.

Coach Mark is a "Ten"! I have been with Coach Mark for more than a year now and he has brought my game to a level of play that is unbelievable. A year ago I would have never thought I could come this far in my game. Coach Mark is a very enthusiastic and dedicated teacher, expert in the fundamentals and has a sharp eye to what needs improvement in your game. He teaches from experience of over 20+ years of playing and teaching. Extremely knowledgeable of the game and bring lots of energy and FUN to the court. I have enjoyed his lessons immensely, from day one. Looking forward to more sessions.

This coach came to one session and then cancelled because he didn't like the traffic. He was unbelievably rude, as well. He told me he, "didn't need my money". Wow.

Coach Mark is by far the best tennis coach I have ever had. He is patient and I have seen much improvement in only the first 2 lessons. I would highly recommend him.

Coach Michel is an excellent coach. He is knowledgeable and able to teach in a clear and non-threatening manner. My lesson was fun and thorough. I really enjoyed it.

We are very happy with Coach Mark. He is very enthusiastic about tennis. I can see improvements in my daugter's game after just a few sessions. We would definitely recommend Coach Mark to anyone!

I had so much fun and learning after one session with Coach Mark! He is an excellent coach, within a few minutes, I already learned so many new things and number of flaws in a way how I was not being disciplined enough to get ready to hit the ball. Now that every time when I am about to swing at the ball, I always remember what coach Mark said to me, I then hit the ball much more cleaner. I would recommend Coach Mark to anyone.

So far I had six lessons with Mark. Thanks to him, my shots became stronger and my serves have improved tremendously. Mark cares about students and their learning. Most importantly, his enthusiasm for teaching makes lessons fun!

Mark has been an amazing coach during last few months. I am a beginner and he has been very patient and practical. Also Mark always makes sure to encourage me during sessions. I like training with him and will continue to do.

Mark is great to work with. He gives clear, concise tips on how to improve your strokes. He pairs his instructions with lots of encouragement. I would recommend him to anyone looking for private coaching!

I've been taking lessons with Mark for around 1 month. I only have good things to say about him. Mark is super friendly, upbeat, has an obvious passion for tennis and also for teaching. Mark has years of experience teaching and has also played the game at the highest level, There are a lot of "tennis pros" out there who will try toconvey what it takes to hit a good ball without ever having hit one themselves—Mark is not one of those guys.In the short time that I've trained with him, I have seen improvements in my game; I've learned that it is worth spending a little money to enjoy the game more by playing closer to my potential.Mark is fun and energetic. He doesn't only teach tennis but he spreads his love for it upon you and that's what's attractive about taking his lessons. Five star coach – Looking forward to a long term tennis arrangement and friendship. G. Johnson

I just had my first lesson and I was fascinated by how much I have improved just with one lesson! Coach Mark is very patient, encouraging and enthusiastic about teaching. He systematic approach to tennis techniques make it easy for me to follow through and actually see improvements. He showed me the techniques to do a top spin forehand and backhand which are amazingly achievable. I highly recommend Coach Mark for tennis lessons!

Coach Mark is a great coach. I can see improvements in my daughter's strokes even on the very first session. I really like the way of his teaching techniques.

Coach Mark was great. He improved my ground strokes in just one session. My daughter's practice site changed so it was no longer convenient for me to get to Coach Mark's practice site.

Coach Mark is an awesome teacher. He breaks down technique from the moment you start but then shows you how to build from the base up. His passion for tennis is evident, and he truly loves providing tutelage.

I have known Coach Mark for over 20 years. We competed with each other in College and continued to enjoy regular hitting opportunities. I recommend that any Parent with Children that wants to learn Tennis employ Coach Mark's services. Any Adult, beginner, intermediate or advanced would benefit from even a single lesson!
