I have found that specializing in balance and agility lead to excelled improvement with the basics. Coordination and stability are very important for kids just starting. As for more experienced players we will go based off position and what areas need improvement, I.e. finishing, defending, technique, dribbling, tactical understanding. I personally have played all positions and have been around the game for 20+ years.
Typical Session Plan (varies from player to player and age)
5-15 minute warm up with speed and agility included - Dynamic warmup, stretching, balance, ladders, hurdles, interval/circuits.
10-15 minute technical warmup - quick feet volleys (laces and inside the foot), half-volleys, one touch two touch passing in different directions with varying touches (inside, outside, open hips). Dribbling intervals (different directions, different feet, different surfaces)
10-15 minutes situational passing and dribbling typically to mini goals - opening up and combining the passing and dribbling from the technical warmup. For example, check in bounce with a one touch pass, back up check shoulder two touch pass (first touch through a gate), open up dribbling around an obstacle, combine with me, finish into mini goal.
10-15 minutes Shooting/Crossing/Bigger position based drill - 1. Shooting - Combination to goal, check turn to goal, passing pattern to play out wide and make a dynamic run to finish cross
2. Crossing - Combination/beat defender cross in to me, varying crosses (cut back, near post hard across six yard box and in the air)
3. Defending - Jockying, Recovering balls, dealing with awkward balls, clearances, blocking shots
4. Midfielders - quick combination, spraying out more longer balls, slipping balls in behind, etc.
1st time sessions I evaluate where they are at, ask them their background and where they think they need to improve, and based off the first session I can formulate a lesson plan for them moving forward.
