More About Coach Joshua

I have been coaching volleyball since I graduated high school. In September of 2012, I started as the JV coach for Warren high school (in Downey, CA ) and as an assistant coach for the local parks volleyball academy and league, where I helped younger kids develop the fundamentals for the 6 skills of volleyball. After a lot of hard work and determination, one year later I became the head coach for the park's academy and league programs, where I was now designing the practice plans and teaching the lessons vs just assisting. That year (2013), I partnered with the park's volleyball vendor, VOLITUDE, to create the program's first girls club team. We only had one team, that I coached (which took home a first place metal at the end of the year tournament), but now have a total of 4 competitive teams and all 5 of our current graduates now play in college. In July of 2016, I became the varsity assistant coach and head JV coach for Pius Matthias Academy ( Downey, CA ) where we won our first tournament trophy for volleyball, and was given the role of volleyball director for the parks programs, where I was in charge of overseeing all the other coaches, teaching them how to become better coaches and worked on getting more kids involved. In July of 2017, I was hired as the head varsity coach for Ocean View high school's Boys and Girls volleyball programs and I am currently coaching there. For ocean view girls volleyball we had an undefeated tournanament, resulting in their first tournament trophy for volleyball in several years. The OV girls then went on to win a league championship and made it to the quarterfinals of CIF. I'm still currently the director for volitude ( girls ) volleyball club, as well as a 14s coach and 16s coach, a 12s assistant coach, the volleyball director for the apollo park programs, a 16s boys head coach for Long Beach volleyball club and I'm currently excepting private training requests. That's a total of almost 300 athletes that I am committed and determined to help grow in our sport.
I am first aid and cpr trained and certified.
I am certified through NFHS in the following courses:
- concussions in sports
- first aid, health and safety
- fundamentals of coaching
- sudden cardiac arrest

As an athlete, I played for Warren high school in Downey, Ca (2009-2012). I was on JV for 1 year as an opposite hitter and Varsity for 3 years as an opposite hitter ( first year )and a middle blocker ( last two years ), finishing with an almost undefeated senior year, but lost in the cif division 3 finals. Still determined, I went on to play at Long Beach City College in Long Beach, Ca (2014-2016), where I played as and opposite hitter for my first year and as an outside hitter, for the first time, my sophomore year. I finished my sophomore year (2016) with a undefeated record, a state championship, and ranking at #2 in the CCCAA for most points per game. I received an all tournament team award for my 25 kills in the semifinal match and 18 kills in the finals match of the state championship tournament.

When I work with an athlete, I believe we have to focus on what fits your needs best by having a thorough conversation about your skills, mindset, fitness and nutrition. I'm a huge believer in creating strong relationships with my players so that they can feel comfortable. I don't train by negatively screaming at you, but instead making you critically think about every move and correction, while boosting your self esteem. I can coach you for any skill and I have a wide variety of progression practice plans to help you build deep muscle memory of what we are going over. An example would be a light warm up, followed by ball control drills, followed by skill development drills in a controlled environment, followed by skill development drills in a high stress game like scenario and finished with a cool down stretch with a recap of the practice.

Met up with coach Joshua for the first, not knowing what to expect..He made me feel positive about my skill level on my first practice session.I'm very pleased and excited with my improvement with only my first session. Coach Joshua definitely is an awesome trainer....thank you..

I attended what will be the first of a number of training session with Joshua today. I started by booking just one session to make sure that Joshua was someone that I would be able to learn from. By the end of the first lesson, I had decided that he definitely is someone that I can learn from. He had a positive attitude that he conveyed in every instruction he gave. He started by assessing my skills and suggesting changes that I could do to improve my game. He did this with every position and skill set needed in volley ball. The entire time he stayed positive and encouraged me to stay positive, relaxed, and focused, without becoming tense or stressed over every mistake I made, which were numerous. I’m a beginner, so there is plenty of room for improvement. In addition, he stayed observant of my actions so that he was continually able to suggest improvements and corrections throughout the training session, all the while conveying this information in a helpful and positive way. So yes, I did book additional training sessions with Joshua. He's a very good coach.

I had the most amazing experience with Joshua on my first session last Tuesday. First I didn't know what to expect, but I had good feelings about him from all the texts I got prior to the first session. I am a horseback riding instructor and I get very critical when it comes to coaching. When I first met him in person, right away he put me at ease. He paid close attention to how I was playing and provided me with simple instructions to improve my skills. Every time I followed his instructions properly, my ball was heading in the right direction followed by Joshua's positive reinforcements. Joshua reviewed all the main techniques in playing the game and I was able to practice them all. Even though I stumbled and fell several times, trying to follow the ball with my feet, I was happy. Joshua did not laugh at me, he kept on encouraging me. I felt like I have a good friend in the court with me, right by my side. That is what good coach does, always on your side, like Joshua. After the first session, Joshua did not rush me out the door. He talked to me about things and then sent me a review of what I practiced and made me feel about myself for trying. If anyone is looking for a volleyball coach, you must have him as your coach. I strongly recommend him getting him on your team. Joshua is Simply Marvelous!!

Joshua is a great coach who is able to help players of all ages. ( I am 72). He is the first coach I have even seen like him. He was able to teach me the basics of a lot of technics in our first session. We were able to touch base on passing, setting and spiking to help me get ready to play in a game the following weekend. He is a really calm and cool person, who was able to give me answers to all my questions in a way I could understand. I will definitely be continuing my training with him. He is very flexible with his appointment scheduling and his response to my messages was very quick! I am really happy with him. I would defiantly refer him to my friends.

In a session, Coach Josh was able to identify problem areas in my setting and push me through drills to solidify better habits. He's motivating and was able to get me outside my comfort zone. Overall, great coach!

Joshua is one of the best coaches I have ever come across. I've been coaching volleyball for seven years but had josh as a mentor for the last two. I've grown more as a coach in the last two years than I had the previous 5 years with his guidence. He makes seemingly complicated scenorios easy and simple to understand and I think that's what allowed me to excel.
Out of all my coaches I've ever had, coach Josh was the one to turn volleyball into a lifestyle for me. We worked so hard towards me being a great athlete, student and person.
