More About Coach Joshua

I have been coaching girls' basketball in the Houston area for 7 years, 3 as the varsity assistant and JV coach at Westside High School and 4 years as the head coach at Mayde Creek High School. In addition, during the summer of 2017, I coached for Texas Elite AAU Program and gave private lessons to 2 high school girls basketball players. One of those athletes was about to enter her senior year at Cy-Fair High School. The previous season she sat the bench and rarely saw the floor. After her season, she texted me to tell me how her season went. I use it as a review and have listed it below:

"My shot definitely improved ever since our training! Both of my coaches noticed and were impressed? I also drove in and found open lanes to the bucket a ton more. They told me I had played really well during pre-season, and I ended up working my way into the starting 5 within our first couple of pre-season games. I had so much more confidence in my shot and made a couple 3 pointers every game! My free throw percentage was also super high throughout the season. I was somewhere between 70 and 80%. I even my 2nd Team All-District.

This review meant a lot to me. This athlete had a tremendous transformation in a short amount of time, and I was so happy to hear that her hard work had been rewarded with a positive senior year experience.

My playing career lasted through high school. During my senior year at 3A Glen Rose High School in Texas, I was second in our area in 3-pointers made and 3-point %. Awards included; 2X All-Tournament and 1st Team All-District. My team went 32 and 1 losing in the regional tournament. I did not have interest in playing in college, as I decided to pursue education at Texas A&M University for coaching. I have wanted to be a coach since I was 7 years old and truly enjoy it more than playing.

During my training sessions, I first evaluate the overall skill and level of the athlete. I then require a 20 minute conversation to discuss the changes they want to see in their game and what aspirations they have. Once that is completed, I will give them an individualized and realistic plan that will maximize their strengths.

My strengths are in the areas of Shooting and Defensive footwork/pressure. I believe these two areas are the fastest way to get more playing time at the highest level. I am competent in teaching other fundamentals and higher-level skills, but I am most comfortable in overhauling shooting forms and developing elite defensive players.

Example Session Plan for Athlete interested in improving shooting percentage:
*6 Level Form Shooting + Corrective Shooting Drills (2 Min Shooting-2 Min Corrective Drill-Repeat X 2)
*Rapid Fire Shooting (50 Set on Shooting Gun)
*In-a-Row Shooting Game (Focuses on athlete having to make more shots in-a-row to complete game)
*6 Level Form Shooting + Corrective Shooting Drills
*18 Point Shooting Game

I place a high value on intrinsic competition. Therefore, I have spent my coaching career either creating or learning individual competitive drills. During work-out sessions, athletes will compete in fundamental drills and games that create an internal pressure and competitive intensity. I strongly believe that in order to compete against others, athletes first have to learn how to compete against themselves. As athletes, ourselves not our competitors are the biggest challenge standing between us and success. Our sessions together will help all athletes learn how to use purposeful practice to conquer their individual internal struggle so that they can become the best performer they are capable of becoming.

Client Reviews

Quote from an athlete I trained for 2 months. As a Junior she sat the bench, but as a Senior, she earned a starting spot. She stated that her senior year "went really well...my shot definitely improved ever since our training! Both of my coaches noticed and were impressed! I also drove in and found open lanes to the bucket a ton more. They told me I played really well during pre-season, and I ended up working my way up to the starting 5 within our first couple of pre-season games. I had so much more confidence in my shot and made a couple of 3 pointers every game! My free-throw percentage was also super high through out the whole season. I was somewhere between 70% and 80%. My individual performance definitely improved a lot, and I made 2nd Team All District :)!!
