More About Coach Illusion Institute

In regards to coaching teams, we have extensive experience with Select Travel Basketball in the Houston area. A few of our trainers have also coached at Baytown Christian Academy and First Baptist Christian Academy. Improvement is what is most important to us, be it fast or slow. Forward progression is paramount regardless of pace.

In terms of one-on-one training our trainers are teachers first, patient, and have been vetted through extensive training, to enable them to teach players that need plenty of work just as effectively as more advanced student-athletes.

Each of us have an inward desire to use our basketball and life experiences as a tool to help young student-athletes further their education without going into debt with student loans or draining their parents’ bank accounts by earning a basketball scholarship.

Simply put our passion has, and always will be, the success of others. In particular, the many student athletes that we work diligently for to help earn a basketball scholarship. Along the athletic scholarship journey, we can say in complete confidence that we can get your favorite student-athlete to where they want to be. Whether it be on an 8th grade A-team, a varsity roster ahead of schedule, or a college roster, let's work together to make it happen!

Our lead trainer was a four year letterman and was fortunate to have an opportunity to play the game in Belgium, but in his opinion it's not important that he list his on court accolades here, but rather how he can help a young athlete reach their potential.

A parent once told him that just because a player had great ability on their field of play, that doesn't mean that they can pass that on and teach it to a student. That same parent told him that when a coach or trainer starts off talking about themselves and "dropping too many names and trophies", run the other way because they may feel it's all about them and not the student-athlete. He was floored and temporarily at a loss for words and learned a valuable lesson: It's more important that he display a track record to translate knowledge of the skill at hand than to be able to do it himself, no matter how well he did.

The ability to transfer knowledge is vitally important when it comes to one-on-one training, so we will reiterate that we have consistently improved the teams and players we have worked with, and that we have an ultimate mission that we strive for. That mission is to help each student-athlete achieve their goals, which may vary, but at the end of the line we hope to help each young athlete we work with earn a basketball scholarship so that they have a chance to further their education and avoid debt from student loans and save Mom and Dad several thousands of dollars.

Regardless of the natural ability or skill level, improvement will take place with any student-athlete we work with. Period.

The first thing our trainers do is speak to the parent, and explain to them that they focus on fundamentals and building a rock solid foundation before moving on to more difficult tasks. Believe it or not, some parents want their son or daughter to jump straight into what's popular on social media platforms. We're the wrong trainers for that. The first several sessions, the player may not even break a sweat. Not because the trainer is lecturing, but because the trainer is teaching. The trainer demonstrates, then the player does it. When they have the basic concepts down, the trainer slowly pushes them towards completing the newly acquired skill under duress and discomfort.

Also, our trainers always make it a point to explain to the player that this is a privilege. Their parents DO NOT have to provide them with a trainer, so we make it crystal clear to the player that the moment they don't hold their end of the bargain, we will no longer train them and gladly refer them to another trainer. Mom and Dad are doing their part by providing the resources, the trainer will certainly do their part, but the student-athlete must be aware of their part in the equation as well. They need to come prepared to learn and ready to put some work in. At the first session, this conversation is always had.

Each student-athlete is unique and may need to work on different skills depending on their position, but typically trainers start with shooting development. This is because there are two ways to make a roster, from the 7th grade B team all the way up to the professional level, and that is to be able to shoot the ball well and play excellent defense. Development of a consistent perimeter shot is a great way to improve the impact any player has on the offensive side of the ball. Even post players that get rebounds and kick it out to the point guard shoot the ball... at the free throw line. It's no way around it. Our trainers have a system that guarantees significant improvements on a player's shot.

After the correct amount of progress has taken place with shooting, we move on to ball handling and dribbling as well as other skills. It would be difficult to display exactly what would happen in a session, as each trainer treats each student-athlete they work with on a case by case basis, but shooting is often the first skill addressed. Our trainers don't believe that a "cookie cutter" session would be fair to the parent or the child.

One thing that is GUARANTEED... and that's big time changes.

my son is a sophomore on the basketball team. For his birthday we booked 10 sessions with coach joseph so that he could focus on some key things. Since starting with coach joseph I have seen some major improvements not only in my sons shooting ability and ball handling ability but also his confidence level. Booking coach joseph was a great decision and I would highly recommend him not only because of his ability to teach but also for his overall positive energy with kids.

Great first session. Coach Harris was punctual, organized and very encouraging. Will definitely schedule more sessions!

Our son is really enjoying working with Joseph!

Helped me improve my form. Really appreciate it, can't wait for my our next session.

Our first session with Joseph was fantastic - we're excited to work with him more. The ball handling drills were challenging and unique, and my son already sees some improvement, and has new drills to practice with.

I don't even know where to start to describe how wonderful Joseph is or how much of a difference he has made to my son's basketball skills. For years, my son played what Joseph calls "daddy ball" on teams coached by volunteer fathers, who often had never played the game themselves. As a result, my son had never learned proper ball-handling skills and had had little experience in shooting during games. Joseph changed all that - in just 9 lessons! My son now handles the ball significantly better than his teammates, shoots better and scores almost all the time he shoots, and is one of the best rebounders on the team. We plan to have Joseph work with him again before Freshman Basketball tryouts this fall. I cannot recommend Joseph enough!

Coach Harris has been wonderful! He is very knowledgeable and above all--patient. I have been amazed at his ability to relay the mechanics of shooting, ball handling, and footwork in a methodical and systematic way. It is truly remarkable to watch my son's progress from week to week.

Coach Joseph has helped Grant improve his skills at every lesson. He continues to be 100% professional and also very engaging and encouraging with Grant. It has been a pleasure working with Joseph!

When I was a Junior in high school is when I really got to know him and he told me that I had to get my ball handling together. Here I am at Westpoint playing for the Black Knights.
I like how he is always encouraging me, it's like all he offers is positive stuff for me to think about. He helped my get my handles right! His support helped me get into William Penn University.
He's been more than a coach, he's been a role model to me. He always pushes me to get better and believes in me. He's a big part of why I am at Incarnate Word University today.
He can relate to just about any player, parent, or coach. He gives great examples so that kids can understand what's going on. When he meets a person and starts talking, the next thing you know two hours have past.
Joseph is an exceptional young man that has the ability to pull things out of players that few can and he can instill self confidence extremely well.
