More About Coach Jon

More than 10 years coaching community youth sports (basketball, baseball, football) rarely without a winning season. Selected by peers to coach Cal Ripken Stafford Baseball League (SBL) U11 and U12 AA All-Star teams, reaching the Virginia State Championship and placing 3rd in 2002. Led Stafford girls rec-league basketball team to an undefeated (10-0) season in 2006.

College: Played four years on the University of Southern California (USC) Ice Hockey team for four years in the late 80s.

High School: Lettered eight times in three varsity sports. Golf team won three tournaments my senior year. Selected 1st Team All-Conference in golf three years and served as captain of three teams. Qualified individually for the Minnesota Golf Association (MGA) Junior State Championship (1984). American Legion baseball team won the Senior Cal Ripken Minnesota State Championship (1984). Defensive captain and two-way starter on varsity football team senior year.

Most of my experience is with youth (boys and girls) under 16 years old. My coaching philosophy and process stresses fundamentals to include thinking, moving, passing, dribbling, playmaking, shooting, positioning, rebounding, footwork, and conditioning regardless of skill level. I build upon these fundamentals through repetition before introducing more sophisticated playmaking and scoring tactics and defensive techniques/drills depending on a player's skill level and personal interests.

If coaching a team, I focus on developing skills that are appropriate to maximize each player's rate of learning and improvement. Individual learning is applied within a team context whenever possible. For highly skilled and experienced players, I teach and reinforce advanced scoring techniques, situational defenses, and smart decision-making. I want all of my players not only to learn and master the fundamentals but also to understand when and why a particular move or tactic should be used. Of course, having a good attitude and a lot of fun is essential for effective learning :-)
