More About Coach John

I have been a college basketball coach for the last 10 years, and a coach for four years at a Junior College. As a player, I had the opportunity to learn from some great coaches that molded and shaped my life for the better. I played at many different levels from high school to the All Army Team and overseas. No matter where I played I always worked hard and gave my full effort regardless of the outcome. During our lessons I expect the same from my players.

Lessons are 75 minutes of high intensity and high energy basketball training. During these lessons we will work on all aspects from guard play to post play, from driving to shooting, and one-on-one moves. I believe in working out of the triple threat stance and teaching you how to create space and your own shot from the defense. Each drill we do will be done at game speed with game intensity. This will help you develop the work ethic you need to be successful at the next level. If you want to be the best you have to sacrifice your time and energy to reach your goals.

When working out a new player I like to start by doing some foot work drills. Pivots, jump stops, step step. Learning not to travel is very important and will help you have confidence every time you catch the basketball. I have added a clinic format below teaching moves you can use from the post and the wing positions.

Coach Flo’s
Post Guard
Less is Better Clinic

Intro: Coach Flo
Today we will be going over many concepts that you may already know. The difference between what you know and what we know is the attitude behind it.

* Having an attitude with what you do and how you do it.
* Looking the part of a player, Body language/stance.
* Apply what you learn, don’t be to big time to learn old and new things

Learning how to Post 101:
Absolutes: Things you do every time.

• Catch, Chin, Check
• Play low to high
• When you catch, utilize everything you have on your body … shot fake, ball fake, head and shoulder fakes, eye fake, all must be Violent and tight, must sell the fake to the defense
• See 90%of the floor when you catch the ball
Operational Area: 5 spots = 1 post up game, 2 face up game 3 mid range game, four trailer game, 5 short corner game

Warm-up: 5min (with ball) first step explosion to a jump stop on each line, pivots, front, reverse, left and right permeate foot, quarter pivots.

Fundamental rows: (4 rows 3 to 5 deep) 5 min Offensive stance break down, ball placement, rips, jab fakes, crossover step, lead foot attack, shot fake

Mikan Drill and Station work: 1 player does mikan, the rest do station work, after 1 min switch
1 min: lay-ups, reverse right and left
1 min: off two feet
1 min: Continuous Jump Hooks: left and right hand from the mini lane
1 min: Block to Block bank shots: go on the baseline side
Station 1: Rapid fire passing (two balls, partner up)
Station 2: Rebound outlet
Station 3: Rips, shot fakes, jabs, pass fakes,
Station 4: Ball Handling, cone work, push dribble R/L, Cross, In/Out, Between legs

Trail Three

Post games: One on One
Rules: each offensive player gets two outs per turn. Two dribbles max. One reset per play. Offensive player can play out of the low post or mid post. First to 10 pts wins

How to be a Wing 101:

Operational Area: 3 spots = 1. Inside (finishing your drive) 2. Mid range (pull up or floaters) 3. Deep range (have the ability to shoot the long ball).

Things you must be able to do as a Wing Player:
• Shoot the ball and score at all three spots(inside, mid, outside)
• Have the ability to create your own shot as well as a shot for your teammates
• Have strong handles
• Be the best defenders on the team
• Be Tough, Smart, and Unselfish

Getting open: L cut, V cut, Circle cut, Basket cut (back door) Groups at a basket
Teaching Point: Be physical with the defense, get inside there body and then escape to the ball. Make sure they catch in triple threat. Teaching Point: Changing speeds and foot work is most important. 2 min each cut

Perimeter Pass Attack (Group) Weak hand pass, Develop the push pass, Rip and go Lay-ups, pull jumpers, rise threes.

2 Minute Drill (Wing player)

Partner shoot/teams: Mid Range
Drive and kick
Drive and replace
Pass and move, Post feed relocate
Elbow catch and shoot jumpers
Pull up jumper spot touch,
Off the dribble, L/R. Start at half ct, run to the middle of the circle, speed dribble to the elbow. left and right,
Curl jumpers on the move. Coach stands at top of key, players makes cut to the elbow for a catch and shoot jumper on the move.

Wing Attack: Probe the defense
“On the run” catch and attack (baby jump stop go)

Rules: 3 dribbles max, One reset per play, one shot only. First to 10 wins

5 spot shooting make 50 threes as a team, 5 min: groups of three to five catch in the ready position, hands ready, feet ready.

Closing remarks: Coaches: Why we play this game

Post Concepts:

1. Own the mid-line, the closer to the midline you play, the less skill you need
2. Tape a miniature lane, post in the mini lane, get some depth
3. Don’t post up…post across
4. Give them in game goals
a. 3 free throws per half
b. So many rebounds in a quarter
c. Get one pass ahead layup per half
d. Update them when they come out of games, during time outs
e. The role may not be what you want, but it’s what we need to win a championship
5. If a big can find a niche, he will find the floor, you must have an energy niche
6. There may be bad first shots, but seldom are there bad second shots
7. When bigs run the floor they are like Velcro, it sucks in the defense…running rim to rim requires no skill but tremendous commitment and will
8. Get the ball in the paint 60 times a game (NBA) 48 a game (NCAA)
9. Run rim to rim in 3-4 seconds
10. You cant rebound too much… the more you go after the more you get
11. Concentrate on the middle and opposite wedges when you rebound

Teaching Points:

1. It is fist fight to get open, it is a foot fight to score
2. It is a leverage game to get position, it’s a shoulders game, low shoulder wins
3. Three C’s- Catch Chin and Check…check for (1) cutters (2) Traps (3) Digs
4. Perpendicular Post ups- create an angle with you baseline foot, at that point your shoulder should
be square to the ball
5. The floor always shrinks at the next level- quickness and length
6. Your knees are involved in leverage
7. Your feet give you the advantage, the ball gives you separation
8. See 90% of the floor when you catch the ball
9. Give up position for possession
10. Butt into thigh…No deny
11. Play low to high
12. You must sprint to spacing
13. When you catch the ball pause for poise
14. Let the garbage clear before you go to work
15. Post depth…Depth makes the game easier
16. When posting don’t be concerned with the defenders feet, rather the deny arm
17. Dribble the ball to get in line with the target hand when feeding the post…”get the palm”
18. Offensive rebounding…know your teammates because it gives you a head start
19. Run rim to rim not free line to free throw line
20. Don’t waste a post-up when the ball can’t get to you, it’s better to be late than early
21. You can’t play straight up--- mid line- rent- homeless

Making Moves:

1. Feet first…ball second
2. If you need it…shoulder hips
3. On the catch…read don’t rush
4. Let the feeders cut…Let the junk clear out
5. Don’t limit you options by where you post
6. When you catch, utilize everything you have on your body…shot fake, ball fake (violent and tight) eye fakes
7. Play off two feet
8. Drop Steps—be at the rim---ankle to the middle of the rim
9. Inside—Outside—Deeper
10. Inside—Outside—Follow with a Pick and Roll
11. Change speeds on your moves
12. Screen the first guy…post the second guy
13. Know the floor…levels 1-4
a. Level 1- Sprint
b. Level 2- Locate the Ball
c. Get to the Front of the Rim
d. Move to the ball side

Client Reviews

I had the honor of playing for Coach F. this past spring and summer (2010). He helped me grow and improve as a basketball player tremendously in the span of 5 months. He gave me the opportunity to play basketball at a high level this summer and is currently helping me get recruited. He is honest about your game and what you need to improve on. If your dream is to play college basketball and improve as a basketball player, play for Coach F.
I played for Coach F. for three years, and I improved so much in that timespan. He is a dedicated, respectful and disciplined coach who will put in as much effort as his players do. He takes basketball very seriously and takes pride in coaching. As a junior in high school I received very little recruitment, and due to working with Coach F. my offers improved tremendously. I received a scholarship during my senior year to play where I am at now, San Francisco State. Although college basketball is extremely intense, Coach F. could not have prepared me better for it. Although he is tough and tells it how it is, he always has the players best interest in mind. If your goal is to improve and get better, Coach F. is the coach you want.
I just wanted to take a moment to thank John F. and his Pump N Run program for everything they've done to help my son with his goal of playing basketball at the collegiate level. My son has spent two years in their program, during which time he has received excellent coaching and has had the opportunity to play against some of the top talent in the nation. Coach F. is a tough, intense coach who really knows his stuff. My son was able to showcase the skills learned under his guidance in some top-tier tournaments with his Pump N Run squad over these last two years in places like Denver, Las Vegas and Southern California. If you have talent and are looking for a program to help you take it to the next level, I would highly recommend that you check-out what John F. and his Pump N Run organization have to offer.
