More About Coach Dr John

I am a board certified health professional and a Certified Master Throwing Instructor trained at the University of Southern California (USC) by Dr. Tom House, the noted throwing expert. In addition, I have received baseball injury training from Dr. James Andrews, the noted orthopedic surgeon, at the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI).

Our focus is simple: To be a successful baseball player (pitcher, infielder, outfielder, catcher) at any level of the game requires you to how the proper level of fitness and throw efficiently without fatigue or pain. That's why we focus heavily on specific fitness programs and throwing drills that improve a player's throwing distance and velocity.

Currently, > 90% of my clients are elite athletes who go on to play at the college level, with > 50% of those playing at Division I NCAA schools. I also have experience in rehabilitation of athletes to return them to a safe and higher performance level of throwing.

We also work with groups or teams within a mini-camp or clinic format, which can be tailored to the client's needs (e.g., fitness-specific, throwing-specific, recovery-specific, or any combination). Please contact me for group rates.

Over the last 17 years I have worked and trained with over 7000 players in various settings (camps, clinics, 1-on-1's) across the US. I currently evaluate and train players in the Tampa, FL area.

All of our programs start off with an 3-part, 90 min evaluation of the player's shoulder and elbow health, muscle strength, stability, body flexibility, throwing signature, genetic velocity, and point-in-time velocity. You will then receive recommendations on improving throwing performance and health. Subsequently, a player can train with us (typically two to three 60 min training sessions) to learn how to throw easily and correct their mistakes on-the-fly.

If a player has physical issues or other immediate problems (i.e., injuries) that need to be addressed, then we strongly recommend that the player address these issues first before entering into any training program. All participants must have medical clearance before participating in our program.

Client Reviews

Dr. Evans is very knowledgeable and provided great information during the evaluation session. We left with a good deal of information regarding what my son was doing well and what he needed improvement on in terms of throwing mechanics.

Our experience with Dr John was very very helpful. His advice and coaching was spot on and Max is excited about doing the recommended stretching/exercises to improve his passing. Can't wait to go back and show Dr John his improvement.

Our session with Coach Dr John was fantastic. He was wonderful with my son. He shared a plethora of knowledge on what to do and not do with our ten year old pitcher. I highly recommend this coach and look forward to working with him again . Thank you!

It was a pleasure meeting with Dr Evans, he did a complete evaluation of our son which has helped us find the right program for him. Dr Evans is one of the few experts with the right knowledge and certifications and the capability to give the right examination for a pitcher who desires to continue pitching HS and beyond. If you are serious and want to get better, I without reservation strongly recommend Dr Evans.

Coach Dr John worked with my son today and I was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. My son is a D1 pitcher and he cannot believe how much knowledge he obtained from Dr. John in one meeting and he looks forward to working with him again. I highly recommend Dr John to any player looking to stay healthy and become a better pitcher.

Coach provided a thorough and honest evaluation of my son's current physical status and potential pitching level. We will be continuing with further instruction to help my son enjoy his senior season.

My son is working with Dr. John and into his first session is already impressed and excited for his 2nd session. His knowledge and expertise is refreshing and eye opening! We are glad we found him and look forward to a great future and relationship as well the opportunity to learn more!

Very knowledgeable, and the initial meeting was very beneficial to help my 14 year old grandson improve on his pitching technique, and very important - his warming up and stretching exercises before a game. We learned more in this session than all the years of training since T-Ball. We look forward to working with Dr. John E. with the goal of helping my grandson improve this part the game. I highly recommend his expertise.

Dr John first evaluated then gave my 12 yr old son two coaching sessions. Even though he didnt pitch in the first session and only did drills, my sons pitching form improved (still a long way to go but, progress) and the velocity and accuracy of his pitches increased significantly. He taught some grips for a natural sidearm pitcher which work. They were totally different than what other "over-the-top" coaches had taught previously and werent really working due to my sons arm always coming back to its natural position.

He gave my son specific exercises and a warm up routine to do before pitching to help prevent injury. Because Dr John is a real Dr, he was able to explain the reasons behind arm injuries clearly, especially in youth players, to help me understand the issues. He explained the anatomy and growth factors that need to be considered and taught my son the correct motions to use.

The second session involved drills and then lots of pitching. His motion looked totally different by the end of the session; dramatically faster and more balanced. It will be work to maintain but hes got the idea of where he needs to go. Since hes 12, the theory is that he will develop good habits early.

I highly recommend Dr John. He is more expensive than other coaches but I think his advice is worth it. He related well to my son and hopefully, the sessions have decreased the likelyhood of injury and given him a good base to improve his pitching. Now its all up to doing the work.

Amazing coach

My sons experience with Coach John continues to grow. We can see the benefits of all that Coach John is teaching him. More importantly john not only explains what exercises to do he explains why they need to be done for total body balance. It's been very beneficial and has carried over into his other sports as well

I wanted to thank you and everyone at the NPA Camp for such an enjoyable & educational week. I don't think it would have been possible for us to have any better experience. Everyone on the team spent so much time educating my son to help him get better. All Chris kept saying was how great of a time he was having, how much he is learning and can we come back next year. Each of the coaches added so much to the learning process, which is a testament to Tom's principals. I was so impressed, even with Tom's very busy schedule he was able to meet with everyone including the parents to make sure they learned as much as they could. I felt his conversation at the start of each day were amazing. I thanked Tom but I honestly didn't know what to say when Tom offered to have the NPA coach on the east coast (John Evans) personally call him to discuss my son to make sure he was trained correctly. It really meant the world to both of us...Thank you again and continued success with your program.
