More About Coach John
I have experience in team management, practice management, game-time decision making, defensive coaching, plus pitching and hitting specialties and training. I have provided individual coaching and training for junior college, high school and little league players in outfield play, hitting and pitching. I developed a training class for introduction into hitting for high school, college and prospective professional baseball players. I currently assist a local Community College team. I played and coached the Los Angeles Air Force, LA City semi-pro team, played and was assistant coach for two SF Bay Area semi-pro teams. I have coached AMDAHL Girls Softball team and was the Head Coach and player for Blues Valley Non-Pro baseball team in Phoenix Az. I was Pitcher and 2nd baseman for Hacienda Hotel Lobos Los Angeles City semi-pro league, and pitched for the 1970 ASU Freshman Baseball Team.
In 2011, I scouted every JC baseball team in the state for a local JC, so am familiar with the level and quality of play at the JC level today, plus their strengths and weaknesses.
I have developed some very innovative approaches for both hitting and pitching and am familiar with all of the different school approaches to hitting, but believe that a tailored approach to the unique personal characteristics of the player always generates the best results.
In 2013, I assisted the French National Baseball team under Boris Rothermundt, concentrating on hitting techniques and working with their two best pitchers, who both have received JC scholarships in the US
ASU Freshman Team 1970. Multiple All Star Teams at the Semi-Pro level, in Phoenix, Bay Area, and Los Angeles City League (1976-1977; 1984-1986), as pitcher and infielder.
Session is dependent on the Customers's Goals. I would expect to put together something based on where the player is and where he wants to go, time available and focus areas.
Some basic training could cover the following:
Pitching:
Stretching and conditioning checks; observation of pitching motion, mechanics, body momentum, pitch finish, pitch grips, trunk and leg power, follow through, ball rotation, stretch, pickoff moves, covering first and home.
- Develop plans to correct weaknesses in each of the above areas.
- Also avaliable to observe game performance, make assessments and provide assessment reports and recommendations.
- Training in pitch sequence development, hitter assessment (strengths and weaknesses).
- Training in the mental aspects of the game. 1st pitch, 3/2, 0/2, 3/0, watching and observing hitters; developing plans for the hitters (1st, 2nd, 3rd AB)
Hitting:
Start with soft toss to assess current hitting approach, stance, swing.
Multiple drills for balance, swing mechanics, power development, vision development, pitch recognition, and pitch selection.
Outfield and Infield Drills available too
