More About Coach John

I have 20 years of experience coaching experience. I have coached Little League, and in my fitst season took my team to win the Green Brook twp Little League. I taught recreation gymnastics at Shields Gymnastics for four years in Hillsborough. I have been a fitness trainer since 1999. I have won several awards, including the 2011 Fitness & Wellness Trainer of the Year. For the last two years I have also have raised the most money in the the Push-ups for Parkinsons contest. I was also a health and Physical Education teacher during this time as well. Where I excel the best at is as a one on one fitness trainer. I have had clients of all ages fro 10 years to 89 years of age.

I was a former baseball, basketball and football player in high school. I was a varsity letterman in football and baseball. I won the Elmer Beiler Award my senior year for academics and athletics. These days I spend my athletic time playing golf, cycling, hiking and skiing.

First I begin with a physical assessment. I want to get feedback so that I can design the best program based on the athletes limitations and strengths. The workout is all based on the sport of the individual and their assessment.
This is an example of one of my junior golf fitness clients workout plan based off of the Titleist Performance Institute
warm-up
1. 10/15 minute warm-up includes: The walking hamstring stretch and the walking glute stretch. Windmills to stretch out the entire body. W-turns (holding a golf club behind back) to loosen up the back, shoulders and chest. Hopping on each leg 10 times, then finishing threading the needle.
Exercises 3 sets 10 reps
2. Broad Jumps 3 sets 3 reps. marking each and recording the furthest distance, (develops power).
3. Lateral Bounding with a stick, (lateral stability)
4. Lunge with a twist (lower body strength & upper body mobility)
5. push-ups with a clap (core strength & developing power for golf swing)
6. Stability ball jack knifes (developing core strength as well as staying in golf posture)
7. Wobble board swings (balance transferring weight)
8. Seated cable row (strengthens back and maintains golf posture)
we will then close with a 5 minute cool down. the cool down usually includes stretching or foam rolling.

Client Reviews

I've worked with several trainers over the years. John Burns is as good as they come. He's knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated to his craft. As a golfer, I was thrilled to know that John had been certified by the Titleist Performance Institute. His training allows us to focus on exercises specifically designed to improve flexibility for a better golf swing. Best of all, John is a lovely person: even-tempered and always upbeat. I truly look forward to our sessions.
As a retired 65 year old occupational therapist and avid golfer, I sought out the physical training expertise of John Burns. Because I have been trained in physical, social, and cognitive therapy practices, I was searching for an individual who would fulfill my criteria. John exceeded all my expectations from the “Hello.” He performed an inclusive evaluation and continues to tailor our sessions to improve my flexibility, strength, and confidence. My back is now allowing me a golf swing which makes my heart soar. Distance off the tee has increased, and I walk 18 holes with vigor. Our training sessions are varied and interesting based on Titlelist training expertise and John’s own great experience in the physical training field. He has numerous certifications and continues to seek our additional training. I highly recommend John as a trainer for achieving your physical conditioning goals. Please feel free to contact me for further information and praise for John.
