More About Coach James
14-year professional playing career NBA & abroad. 7+ years of professional & collegiate/High School coaching. 15+ years of on-court players Skills enhancement training. Current clients consist of professional (NBA, abroad) as well as amateurs (collegiate and high school).
After high school I received multiple D-1 full-ride scholarship offers to schools like Miami, Texas Tech, Tulane, ect. to play, but for family reasons decided to stay a little closer to home and I accepted a full scholarship to Pearl River Community Junior College. As a Wildcat, I broke school records that still stand to this day. I earned the MVP honors and was named to the All Regional Team. After 2 years at Pearl River, I again started receiving multiple D1 scholarship offers and eventually found my home at Murray State.
There I was named “Newcomer of the Year” in 2002 and led the Racers to the Ohio Valley Conference title that season and to an NCAA tournament berth. After College I didn't feel quite ready for the NBA, so I accepted an offer and moved to Italy to refine my skills in the professional European League. I earned numerous honors in just two years, including Rookie of the Year, Player of the Year, Import Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. After 2 great seasons overseas I then felt ready for the NBA.
The Los Angeles Clippers were my first team in the NBA. I spent two-years with them and right away became a starter for the Clippers and for my first 13 games straight I averaged a double double in every game. I was the only rookie in the NBA at the time putting up those kind of numbers. In 2007, I left the NBA to join TAU, a professional Spanish league team in the ACB. There I lead my team to winning the Championship. Following that season, I had multiple NBA offers on the table. Returning to the NBA for the second time, I chose the Dallas Mavericks for a 2 year contract. In 2010, the last leg of my 2nd year, I chose to be traded to the Washington Wizards due to an offer of more playing time to finish-up the season. In 2011 I chose to bypass a contract renewal from the Wizards, because of the upcoming NBA lock out. I instead chose to joined the Chinese Basketball Association with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. After leading them to the championship game and being nick named "Superman" for my high flying dunks I returned home to finish the NBA season with the Washington Wizards. The following season I once again bypassed the NBA offer and chose to return to China for the 2012 season, but this time with the Guangdong Southern Tigers. I helped to lead the team as well to the CBA Championship game. After the CBA season ended, I was picked back up by the Washington Wizards to finish another NBA season. With me on the floor the Wizards went on the longest winning streak that team had seen in years. In August 2012, I for the 3rd time, bypassed the NBA offers to returned to Xinjiang Flying Tigers where I lead my team to the Championship again. For the 2014 season I took a little time off due to some complications with my wife's pregnancy but then joined the Canton Charge NBA d-league team.
Upon retiring from playing in 2018. I joined the San Antonio Spurs coaching staff. After a few seasons with the Spurs the basketball world was hit by covid. I have spent the past few years coaching and training players.
Before your first session, we will have a phone conversation or I will invite you to observe one of my sessions and make sure I understand what you are looking for and expecting of me, and I will let you know what I expect from you, as a parent, as well as your player. Once on the court, I will put you through a series of drills to create a base assessment for the player's development. I am very hands-on and dedicated to each of my clients as I expect them to show up focused and ready to work. I customize each session for each player and make constant adjustments on the fly. I have played basketball at the highest level and coached at the highest level. I know what coaches and teams are looking for and what it takes to achieve each level. I will work with my players with true dedication to get them to whatever level their hearts want to achieve. A player that trains with me will be challenged not only physically but mentally. The basketball game is not just about who can run the fastest or jump the highest but also about who has the greater basketball IQ. I teach basketball smarts, to see the court, and to read your opponent. I will focus on whatever I feel the player needs to become great. Sessions also include strength training specifically for basketball players. I don't just work out and lift weights; there are specific ways basketball players should train and I've done and have been teaching it for years.
