More About Coach JaMarkus

I have been coaching and training children, teenagers and adults for 7 years. I have personally been able to produce 16 collegiate athletes and 1 professional athlete to this date. I have coached at almost all levels of baseball except for the college and professional level. Last year I coached my sons team Gallup, New Mexico as well as the boys Gallup High School baseball team. I especially love to work with anyone who simply wants to get better. People of all ages who have a burning desire to be the best at what they do no matter the circumstance. I also love people who are willing to learn. I am 27 years old and I still learn something new about the game of baseball everyday. With that being said, the one whom is willing to put their ego to the side will gain more knowledge that could lead them to the promise land. I do have my coaching certificate for the state of New Mexico.

Starting with my club ball days with the Dallas Yankees, I got the opportunity to travel and play in almost of every major city in every state in the US. Playing in tournaments in Hawaii, Myrtle beach, Omaha during the college world series, and Florida, I have had the chance to play against all of the competition that is available. I even got to share a dugout with the great Clayton Kershaw in a tournament in Marietta, Georgia when I was 15 years old. I was able to post a .521 life time high school batting average with 3 of those years being a varsity outfielder. I performed at a high level for those 3 years as I competed at Grand Prairie High School in district 8-5A. Grand Prairie is the home of Major League Baseball Pitcher Kerry Wood! I made the All-State team my junior and senior year as well as being a All-American honorable mention At the age of 17 I was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 23rd round of the 2004 amateur draft. After the negotiations went sour, I decided to go to Navarro Junior College to get stronger and just grow mentally as a baseball player. While there I got the opportunity to play with Chris Davis of the Baltimore Oriels, James Russell of the Chicago Cubs, Jess Todd of the St. Louis Cardinals, and Seth Garrison who played for the Boston Red Sox whom all are either still active MLB players. In district play I went 3-6 against Clay Buckholtz who is now the starting pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. My head coach Skip Johnson is now head of the pitching staff at the University of Texas and has had his staff in the top 5 in the country on a consistent basis for the last 5 years. In the offseason Skip gives lessons to the likes of Clayton Kershaw and Homer Bailey whom is a starting pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds. While at Navarro College I posted a .333 batting average over a 2 year span and competed in one of the toughest JUCO conferences in the country! From there I made the decision to play Division 1 baseball at Dallas Baptist University. The notable players I got to compete with on a daily basis are Victor Black of the New York Mets, Ryan Goins of the Toronto Blue Jays, and Evan Bigley. With injuries mounting and family situations coming up, I decided to leave the game of baseball in 2007. I want to give back because the path I had to take was a tad bit rough and I can show players of all ages how to go about playing the game and eventually get a shot to play in the MLB.

I run a my session depending on the position the athlete plays. Whether it is a pitching, hitting or fielding session, I like to focus on the basics. Too many times athletes forget the basic skills and try to reinvent the wheel. The skills that are needed to be successful are already in place, as athletes we just have to remember the men who paved the way for us to be here and have this opportunity. To be specific, in a hitting session I like to focus on balance, seeing the baseball, hand placement on bat, bat tilt, soft front side, transferring weight, bat plane, consistency with contact, staying inside the baseball, driving the baseball gap to gap, hitting the ball deep in the zone and finishing the swing. In a pitching session I would focus on having a routine, breathing, composure, keep the weight back, pitching grips, pitching to the location, slide step, velocity, stretching, balance, changing speeds, keeping the ball down in the zone, elevating pitches to change eye level and pitching to strengths. As for the session for fielding I like to focus on having soft hands, foot work, tracking fly balls, getting around the baseball, crow hops, communication, arm strength, staying ahead mentally and how to get the most effort out of yourself from pitch to pitch. Each session will provide different coaching points, but they will build up the players mental and physical capacity.

Coach Jamarkus is a great coach! He truly takes time to understand the player. He knows the game and quickly assess what the player needs. He is extremely knowledgeable of the game thus can easily knows how to help. He encourages my son increasing his love for the sport and the spirit to want to continue to do better. One of the best decisions I've made was reaching out to Coach J!

Jamarkus James was a multi-sport athlete in high school, which he received recruiting attention from many top notch colleges. Following his high school career he was selected in the 2004 MLB draft by the New York Yankees. Upon deciding to continue his career in college, I learned that Jamarkus was a leader on, and off the field with an unshakable will to win, and believed in encouragement. While playing along side of him, he showed a great deal of passion for the game, and also got to witness his advanced knowledge of the game to complement his skill.
Having played baseball at the highest of levels, Jamarkus possesses a wealth of baseball knowledge. He knows the ins and outs of the game and is able to relay that information to his players. A standout both at the plate and in the field, he provides outstanding instruction from both sides of the ball. A great person on and off the field, Jamarkus will soon be coaching the nation's elite ball players. --- Seth Garrison
Coach Jamarkus is a very intelligent man on and off the baseball field. He also is a man who can explain in detail or give visual representation. Jamarkus also works well with kids and is always encouraging. He has a great baseball background and can teach anyone about the game. I was lucky enough to have him as a coach and a friend. He has taught me skills and details about the game that I still use today to be successful in my high school career. I would recommend this man this man to anyone looking for knowledge about the game of baseball.
I have known Jamarkus for about 2 years. He and I were assistant baseball coaches at Gallup High School. Jamarkus is very knowledgeable about baseball in general, and very good teaching the fundamentals of both offense and defense. He will be an asset to any organization.
I have had the privilege of playing baseball with Jamarkus for many years. I can best describe him in one word "LEADER". Jamarkus is the type of person to take the role of captain and lead his teammates. Never did he put himself above others, in his eyes we were all equal. The charisma he shows on and off the field will give you the feeling of a brotherhood. I have learned a lot from Jamarkus not only on the field but off the field. I am definitely excited to see the qualities that Jamarkus possesses passed on to the next generation of ball players.
I first met Jamarkus as a junior at Gallup High School when he volunteered to share his knowledge with the team and myself. He approached the team in the manner of not knowing a single player or coach, but mentally drilled the thought of state into everybody's minds, including the coaches. I have personally worked with Jamarkus for a little over a year now and I can honestly say I've been more baseball smart than ever before. His knowledge for baseball is phenomenal as he will instantly devote his time to influence lives of athletes in every degree. From just a guy in the stands to a head coach on the field, Jamarkus is most certainly the guy to have around in support. I believe his knowledge is unlimited to those who are eager to learn. Jamarkus has the potential to, by all means, become one of the greatest teachers in the game of baseball period.
Jamarkus James is a great all around person with knowledge of skills and strategy within the game of baseball. His dedication and love of baseball was displayed when we played together as teammates and now will be displayed into his instruction of baseball to the next generation. He was fierce competitor on the baseball field and in life and will be able to pass along lessons more than just baseball for his pupils. Great friend, teammate and now great instructor. Not only was he a great athlete but also a great friend and ambitious person. High character guy, leader, hard worker and always a smile not matter what kind of day he had. A free spirited person always in a good mood no matter what the situation was or what kind of day he was having that day.
JJ was always a hard worker both on and off the diamond. One of the first ones at the field and one of the last to leave. The term lead by example applied daily towards the way . JJ went about his business, yet when needed to boast his feelings and opinions vocally others were sure to listen. A great teammate and an even better friend.
JJ is one of the finest young men I have ever had coached at Navarro College ! He has more knowledge about baseball than people way older than him. It is amazing to sit in the dugout during a game & listen to him talk about batters & pitchers as to what their strength & weakness ! He is a very hard worker & believes playing the game the way it needs to be played. Hard work , believing in yourself & hustling all the time is JJ playing baseball ! He will be a great coach providing his players with the best knowledge of playing baseball. Thanks JJ for all you have done & will do for me ! Love Pop
