More About Coach Jamal

I have coached on the High School and Youth levels (ages 9-18) respectively for over the course of the last 12 years. As a former highly touted athlete myself, my aim is to provide student athletes of today's time with the skill level and work ethic that is needed to compete at a high level in the world of growing competitiveness. I try to push athletes to maximize their skill set, while helping them dig deep enough within themselves to understand that they can create their own niche and grow not only as athletes, but as people in today's society. I am big on keeping the aspect of fun in athletics, not just the cliche of blood, sweat, and tears based on their passions to get better. This is what has allowed me personally to develop on and off of the basketball court. I've come from an extremely rough and tough environment, but my passion for sports (specifically basketball), has given me the drive to want to push these tools into the hands of today's evolving athlete. I have coached and trained athletes in the Fairfield County, Connecticut area in my 12 year stint since graduating from college.

As a high school athlete at Westhill High School in Stamford, CT, i lettered in 3 years of varsity boys basketball for the Vikings. I was a 1,000+ point scorer as well as an 800+ career rebounder in my 3 year stint. I was a 1st team All-County and All-State selection in my final 2 seasons and i was a McDonald's All-American Honorable Mention candidate my senior year. I was also ranked among the top 60 seniors in the U.S. I was the #1 ranked player from the state of Connecticut in my final season. After graduating high school, I attended Naugatuck Valley Community College in Waterbury, CT where I was named the New England Region Most Outstanding Player in my first season with the Green Wave. I was a 2 year starter and named 1st Team All-New England Region in both of my seasons at CVCC. I broke the school's record for Most Blocks in a game, season, and career while playing the small and power forward positions. I was blessed with a 38+" vertical leap, which helped me average about 6 to 7 dunks/game. In 1997, I transferred to Iona College in New Rochelle, NY and helped lead the Gaels to a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament title and a trip to the 1997-98 NCAA tournament against Big East Power Syracuse University and fell one shot short of advancing. I was a co-captain in my senior campaign at Iona and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Broadcasting and Television Productions.

A typical session with me consists of a 45 to 70 minute workout geared towards agility, strength, and/or fundamental skills (depending on the age and skill level of the client). I try to create consistency within the individual and try to get them to focus on what every drill or fundamental tool is doing for their skill set and mentality. Almost 90 to 100% of my clients have expressed growth within the 2nd or 3rd session (if that option presents itself). I strive to work with seriously passionate and driven student-athletes, to ensure they are given the most out of my skills and work ethic. I tend to use a clock to create mental consistency and an understanding to the particular athlete that they have accomplished a tremendous amount of work within the time frame used. I'm big on planning ahead of the workout (which just makes sense), and I try to cram as many safe and fun drills necessary into the session, to not only build that work ethic within the athlete, but allows them to take what they've done with me to their private development. Again, my aim as a former athlete myself, is to create a consistent hunger and work ethic within my clients that'll prepare them for the next levels of whatever they are growing into with the respective sport. All of this was given to me by an abundant amount of prestigious coaches and mentors, and my passion is to continue to pass the torch to the next generation of student-athletes and potential professionals.

Jamal was observant, encouraging and a great communicator. He was able to quickly assess a basic flaw in my shooting and suggest a correction. So immediately I was feeling positive and having a little success right off the bat made it fun. He is a genuine guy and he took himself down to my level right away. That eliminated any intimidation factor. The bottom line: he made it fun. He's got the right priorities working with those of us who want to learn.

We've sent my son to some of the best camps and clinics we could find before moving from North Carolina to Connecticut (job relocation). We grew accustomed to this process, until we met Coach Jay. My son is 15 and is quickly approaching 6'5". What Jamal has done with our son in the 7 months we've been in the CT area, has superseded what 2 years of camps/clinics has attempted to provide. I'd recommend any kid who's trying to find themself as an athlete, reach out to Jamal for true growth at a young age. He does a great job pushing kids, but is nowhere near over-aggressive with his approach and demeanor. Our son has taken huge steps and is enjoying the game more and more based on what Jamal has taught him about himself. Great person and true inspiration. Any player would be lucky to have a coach and former player such as Jamal as a part of their life and training.
Jamal is one the most inspirational coaches in our league. He spends ample time with each and every kid he can when he walks into any of our gyms. He does a tremendous job encouraging our players and participants on how to keep the game fun and passionate. Most of our participants enjoy watching him coach his personal teams, and by the end of the 1st quarter are wishing they were playing for him. He's a master motivator.
Coach Dunmore has blessed me with the ability to compete at a high level. I worked with him all 4 years of High School, and the work ethic he's instilled in me allowed me to understand what it takes to play at the next level. His dedication to my life, let alone my career allowed me to walk on and earn a scholarship at the universtiy I am currently attending. 2 years in and I am now on a full scholarship and earning double digit minutes based on my work ethic according to my coaches. Thanks Coach J' you are sincerely a blessing to the lives you influence!
