I am not very stubborn with the structure of my sessions, as I understand that different players have different needs. However, I do have some basic principles I follow to ensure my players are making progress.
1. I make sure the player is enjoying the session, and enjoying the process of getting better, ensuring they don’t lose love for the game.
2. I like to help with a player’s weaknesses, and enjoy explaining the importance of using my sessions as a way to work on things that may be hard to work on in a team setting.
3. I also put emphasis on each player’s areas of strength, and encourage all players to have a “top quality” trait. This comes from my own experience as a player because I have been told by professional and collegiate coaches that their players all have this “top quality” trait. If a player is really good at passing, it is important to double down on that trait.
4. Help players understand the game better, build their soccer IQ.
