More About Coach Geno

Immediately after retiring from professional baseball in 2011, I began coaching and providing pitching lessons to players of all ages in Colorado. I have coached at three different levels: college club, high school select, and youth teams. In 2013, I worked as an envoy coach for Major League Baseball in China. I enjoy teaching beginner level skills such as mechanics, as well as more advanced skills like pitch selection and arm maintenance.

I grew up in Houston, Texas and fell in love with baseball at an early age. After being named to the Texas All-State Baseball team my senior year of high school, I went to the University of Texas on scholarship. While in Austin, I was a member of the 2002 National Championship team. I transferred to Texas Christian University for my senior year of college, after which I was drafted in the 14th round of the MLB draft. I made my Major League debut for the San Francisco Giants in 2008, and continued to pitch in their farm system until 2011. Other highlights include being named to the 2008 United States Olympic Baseball team, winning a gold medal for the U.S. in 2009 at the World Cup of Baseball, and being a member of the inaugural Philippine World Baseball Classic team in 2012.

A typical pitching session is between 30-40 minutes. To start, I personally play catch with every pitcher to warm them up and monitor throwing mechanics. I then proceed with 5-10 minutes of drills that focus on balance, arm path, and follow through. After drills, the remaining time is spent throwing a set number of pitches off the mound under my guidance. We conclude with a wrap-up of the lesson and drills to continue in the upcoming week.

Geno was great - my 12 year old son learned a lot and we will be doing more lessons with him!
