More About Coach Garth
I am a US Lacrosse certified coach. I have coached for both high school and middle school levels of play. I have played Lacrosse since I was 6 years old. You will be hard pressed to find a lacrosse player or coach that has as much passion for the game as I do. I believe in Coaching fundamentals and trying to move west coast lacrosse away from the dodge and shoot style to the pass and find the perfect shot.
Collegiate level player for DU. Highschool player and state champion goalkeeper. I have played goal my entire life but can train any position to a High School Varsity level.
First I interview a client over the phone and see what specifically they are looking to improve. I then write a timeline plan for session and email it to the athlete and or parents.
For Goalies on a 1 hour session it would like this.
10 minute Stretch warm up jog.
5 minute evaluate goalie footwork. Are they using a 7 step, 5 step or 3 step or do they just have happy feet
5 minute going over goal stick head and pocket
5 minute evaluate of clearing/passing and stick work abilities
5 minute evaluation of athletes understanding of angles and proper positioning while using proper footwork
10 minutes teaching proper footwork.
Drill Moving along the girls 12 yard fan arc have the goalie moving through the crease and passing and catching with me
Drill no stick playing catch with the goalie making saves with balls tossed to them demonstrating proper step to the ball technique
Drill Jedi. Have goalie take goal stick holding it head down keep goal stick vertical and make saves only using footwork trying to have the ball that is tossed to them bounce off the handle of the goal stick
10 minute teaching/conditioning for long clears/passes
Drill Have athlete start on knees only using their core to make passes then have them move up to 1 knee and continue passing then up to feet and work proper footwork. This drill strengths the goalies core teaches them to rotate their shoulder and hips while clearing.
5 Minute Irish guard drill
Stand at 45 degree angle from the goal post and have the goalie start at the opposite post. at the whistle the goalie must cross the crease and make a save on a ball that is release about 1 second after whistle is blown
This would be for an initial work out of a goalie.
