More About Coach Garrett
I have coached and trained athletes of many different ages.I started out coaching in machine pitch for a year. I then trained a a few 12 and 14 baseball players. I have also coached middle school football.I did most of my training and coaching in Houston, Texas when I lived there for awhile. However, I have trained a few 14 year olds on a traveling team in the middle infield position and also was assistant coach for a middle school football team. I typically work with kids anywhere from 10 years old to seniors in high school.
I have played baseball and soccer my entire life since I was 4. Our team won the State Championship my junior and senior of high school year for baseball. I was starting 2nd baseman my junior year and starting shortstop my senior year. I won most improved player my senior year and 1st team all state. That same year I was second in the state for most goals in soccer. I received offers to play for a few D3 schools in Texas but declined them because I needed to stay close to home. Therefore, I played baseball for the club team at a community college. Took the team to its first ever Club Baseball World Series two years in a row. After my two years there, I went off to play for the club team at Sam Houston State University. My primary position is middle infield, however, I did pitch as well.
Depending on skill level and if it is the first session, stretching is always the first thing I do. If the athlete would like to work on hitting, we would work on soft toss for a couple minutes to refresh muscle memory and loosen up a little more. It all depends on what this athlete struggles with the most to decide what type of training we do. Normally after soft toss, I would throw some to him/her in the cage to take a look at their form. As we progress through this part of the session, I will stop and give feedback. Other drills would be hitting golf ball sized wiffle balls to work on hand eye coordination. There a few other drills I would work with them on that focuses on bat speed, power, etc. At the end of the session we will do a quick stretch so that muscles do not get too tight and sore. My clients can expect to learn something every lesson. They also enjoy working with me because of my age. My clients can also expect to have fun as well during our session, yet they know they will always be working hard. Progress does not happen without effort.
