More About Coach Fran

I have coached diving for over 25 years. I began coaching as a teenager at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, and found I had a natural ability to motivate and inspire athletes. Over the years, I have coached high school, Junior Olympic, lessons, masters, and college divers and teams. At the high school level, I have brought multiple divers to CIF finals each year, encouraged divers to pursue diving at the club level and ultimately helped more than a dozen divers be recruited to dive at the collegiate level. In my five seasons as coach at Claremont Mudd Scripps Colleges, I saw 21 qualifications to the NCAA Regional Championships and 7 to NCAA Div III National Finals.

* First Aid and CPR certified
* California Institute of Technology; September 2022 - present
* Maranatha High School; December 2010 - Present; Head Dive Coach: Developed school’s first ever diving program. Birthed multiple CIF Southern Section qualifiers and finalists in seven consecutive years. Strong focus on preparing divers for college and expanding opportunities for their future.
* Clarement MUDD Scripps Colleges; September 2014 - 2019; Head Dive Coach
* Bishop Amat Memorial High School; February 2009 – May 2009; Head Dive Coach: Started the first ever diving program for the school and lead two divers to the CIF Southern Section Finals.
* Rose Bowl Aquatics; 1997 – 2002; Assistant Dive Coach: Junior Olympic, High School and Masters Groups
* University of Notre Dame; 2003-2004; Club Dive Team Coach
* University of La Verne; 1999; Volunteer Dive Coach

I joined the Junior Olympic dive team at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in 1993 and began the most exciting years of my athletic life. I dove at the Junior Olympic national level on both platform and springboard, competed at the Senior level and enjoyed great success throughout. I went on to dive for the University of Notre Dame. For a few years more, I dove at the Senior and Master levels and continue to enjoy getting on the boards to demonstrate for my athletes today.

* University of Notre Dame Swimming and Diving Team Member; August 1997 – 1999; NCAA Div I Varsity Athlete
* Junior Olympic, Senior and Masters Diver; 1993 – 2002; 4-Time JO National Competitor
* Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy; 1993-1997; Top 10 in CIF Finals all 4 years, Athlete of the Year 1997

My underlying coaching goals with any diver are to help them develop skills, improve overall physical fitness, encourage mental and emotional growth, and nurture a greater enjoyment of the sport. I coach with great enthusiasm and converse with the athlete a lot. Every session begins with a dialogue to help me understand what pain points the diver might be experiencing, establish a tone of high morale and motivation and pin down the goals for that session. Some main areas we may focus on are:
-Learning new skills and dives
-Overcoming and avoiding mental blocks
-Consistency and improved fundamentals
-Improving dryland and gymnastic techniques that will transfer to the pool
-Conditioning!
-Ability to visualize and ‘know’ his/her body
-Goal setting/future planning
-Having fun with the sport (especially important for divers experiencing or who have experienced burn out)

I also use a broad and rounded approach in training my athletes using many methods of training and teaching to address needs including:
-Gymnastics
-Dance
-Videos
-Visualization
-Plyometrics/Crossfit
-Swimming
-Running
-Yoga
-Slow motion drills
-Trampoline
-Spotting belts
-Repetition in training athletes.

Client Reviews

Coach Fran is an incredible swimming instructor! My kids learn and grow so much after each session.

Coach Fran is an awesome Coach!! She made my kids feel very comfortable in the water and after a recent incident, I feel very lucky to have Coach Fran. My oldest daughter told me that she almost went into panic mode when she was in the deep end at her friend's pool, but she remembered Coach Fran's wise words, "Do not panic and find the edge". This is what makes Coach Fran so awesome, she is well respected amongst the kids and her calming nature and confident personality makes swimming in the water so much fun!!

Coach Fran is an amazing coach. She goes out of her way to ensure your child feels secure in order for them to perform to be best of their ability. She is kind and patient. You can tell that she truly cares about the personal growth of the child. Thank you coach Fran for your dedication to coaching our kids.

Coach Fran is a great coach! I would highly recommend her. She has vast amounts of knowledge. She is very positive and can still show ways to improve. I know she would be able to coach any sport and be very successful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Fran is great.
She is great with my young daughter. Pushes her just enough to get he message across, but not too much that is turns my daughter off to diving.
After only three lessons I could see a dramatic improvement.

She's the best! So patient but pushes just enough to make progress! Thank you!

My 10 year old daughter was brand new to diving when she met Coach Fran. I am amazed at how much she has learned in only a couple of months. For beginners, like my daughter, I really like how Fran covers all the basic fundamentals before moving on to more difficult dives. She also has very creative training techniques that have worked great for my daughter's confidence . Fran has a warm, outgoing and fun personality, and is a great fit for my daughter.

Coach Fran is excellent. I am impressed with her professionalism and motivation to kids. She cares ! Coach Fran is creative and speaks to their level of understanding and gets the job done. I would say that she is also very professional with the parents at the same time.

I started the dive team at Maranatha High School as a junior with absolutely no diving experience and no background in gymnastics. Coach Fran taught me everything I needed to know to place at CIF both junior and senior year. With that experience, I have moved on and am currently diving at a D2 college and enjoying every minute of it. Coach Fran is a wonderful coach who is very encouraging and makes practices fun. She will push her divers only to limits that are reachable; I never felt that she was asking me to do something that I was not prepared for. Practices were always fun and we always got a lot accomplished in short time period. *Andrew Rotundo – 2 time CIF Div III Finalist, NCAA Div II Collegiate Diver
Coach Fran is the type of coach you want for any level or any age. She has a passion for the sport of diving and that passion is very contagious. As an athlete she was part of a premier club team and an elite college team (University of Notre Dame). If you’re a first timer, looking to improve your skills, or simply just looking to have some fun!!! I recommend you work with Coach Fran! *Oscar Delgado (Former Teammate) - Big Ten Championships Judge-Official, Indiana University assistant coach (05), Member of Indiana Diving-U.S. Nationals, team champions 2004, Member of University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving, 2 time World cup competitor (Ecuador 00 and 04), NCAA Championships (1999), Age group USA nationals highest finish (5th)
Throughout my high school diving experience, Coach Fran has designed her practices to be encouraging, fun and instructive. She has the ability to coach others in order to reach their full potential as well as have a fun time with the sport she loves. The most important aspect of Coach Fran’s teaching style is that she wants everyone to have fun with the sport and simultaneously learn more about diving. She wants everyone who participates to enjoy the sport and be passionate about what they do. It was ultimately Coach Fran’s fun attitude and passion for coaching that made me return to the sport after an extended break of approximately 2 years. Being a high school coach, she is also very well aware of the different levels of experience that each diver has. On our high school team we have both nationally ranked club divers as well as high school divers who can both relate to her positive, upbeat attitude. Her practices are not only beneficial to the diver, but create a fun environment for everyone she coaches!
