More About Coach Ethan

I have coached as a volunteer assistant on San Diego State University's baseball team. I work with a wide range of age groups and do not have any age limit. It is important for young pitchers to understand the proper pitching mechanics to avoid injury and increase their velocity before bad habits start setting in. Teenagers need to maximize their ability to get noticed for college and professional scouts. I have been coached by Hall of Fame hitter Tony Gwynn and learned valuable insight from the mind of one of the greatest hitters in the history of Major League Baseball. Eric Valenzuela, who is now the head coach at St. Mary's, was my pitching coach at San Diego State University. He coached Brian Matusz and Addison Reed who are on the Baltimore Orioles and Arizona Diamondbacks respectively. In professional baseball, I have talked with many current major league pitchers with the San Francisco Giants and learned valuable coaching skills from Bert Bradley, the Minor League Pitching Coordinator.

I earned a scholarship all four years of college. At San Diego State, I was a two time academic all Mountain West Conference selection. My senior year, our team won the MWC tournament and advanced to the Los Angeles Regional. A few weeks later, I achieved my goal of getting drafted by the San Francisco Giants Organization. In my first year of professional baseball, our team won the 2013 AZL league championship and set a record for the best overall winning percentage.

Pitching is an explosive, athletic movement. I do not like to focus a lot of time on drills because the pitcher becomes stiff and his mechanics may feel scripted. I videotape every session we will have. It is impossible to see your improvement without videotaping your pitching mechanics. I have a pitching app that allows me to rewind, slow motion, and fast forward your pitching mechanics and show you exactly what you could improve on. It is very possible to see immediate velocity increases in a short period of time by implementing the technique I will teach you.
