More About Coach Doug

As a former professional baseball player I have a passion for the game that has developed into a passion for developing young players. With over 15 years experience in coaching and instructing kids ranging from 8-15 years in age, I have had the fortune of starting two baseball teams (one USSSA Select & one NWBA team). As a certified Babe Ruth and Cal Ripken instructor I bring both classical training aspects, as well as “school of hard knocks” aspects to my training regimens.

I focus exclusively on pitching development while adding in-field fundamentals to training sessions as we progress.

1990-1991 #1 in starting rotation for Class A State Championship team - Named athlete of the year twice for Henry County
1991-1992 Played baseball on a full scholarship at Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, GA (Highlights include making 14 starts with a 13-1 record, pitching 2 shutouts, and 1 no hitter during this time)
1993 Played summer league at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA (Late inning closer)
1994 Played for Macon Braves (Minor league affiliate to Atlanta Braves)

The best way to describe a session would be to start by saying that nothing is cookie cutter. I believe too many coaches/instructors today try to convey their knowledge of the game in the same way regardless of age, abilities, or even desire to learn. My workouts will always be age appropriate, commiserate with current ability, and aligned with the athletes desire to learn. This is the ONLY way to maximize results! As an example a first pitching session would look like this:
1. Begin with a stretch routine that any pitcher should learn and use their whole life!
2. Have a fun workout while assessing current ability utilizing the latest tech (radar gun, slow-motion video…)
3. Discuss any “big issues” found during initial assessment, and there is always at least one big issue☺
4. Formulate a workout plan for future sessions that not only focuses on the issues, but also builds the fundamentals necessary to maximize potential while minimizing injury!

In follow up sessions I focus on three key areas for pitching development:
1. Balance: I believe this is a lost art and is absolutely not being taught at the 8-12 year old level today. This is because coaches are too focused on release point and velocity, which is the LAST thing they should be focused on at this age.
2. Body: This focus area exploits the importance of the body as a tool in creating momentum (yes, and increasing velocity) without introducing additional arm strain or fatigue.
3. Grip: Another lost art as coaches are too busy showing players how to hold the ball in terms of seam alignment vs. teaching them how to actually hold the ball in terms of grip strength, finger coverage, and palm separation.

Client Reviews

Where has coach Doug been hiding? I am upset that I have spent thousands of dollars over the past few years getting "coaching" lessons and playing every weekend while seeing little improvement with my 14 year old son's pitching. Coach Doug referred to it as the local YouTube baseball clinics that use YouTube words to instruct kids. He hit the nail on the head as every word and technique he referred to we have heard or been told to implement over the past few years. Enough ranting! Within the first 30 minutes of our session coach Doug was able to point out two issues with my son's balance and body movement (yes, nothing to do with his arm movements or release point!). They seem obvious now, but only because we saw them in slow-motion. Coach Doug believes in identifying the exact problem point/s and then prescribing a specific regimen to begin correcting those issues. I left our session feeling re-energized that there is someone in this county that knows what they are talking about. Without question I will be re-booking coach Doug and recommending him to anyone that my son's team does not play against:)

My 15yr old son had a great experience working with Coach Doug! I can't stress this enough because we had tried other pitching coaches to help work on improving his mechanics, but at the end of the day it felt like my kid was just another 30 minute lesson with no real plan to get him throwing using his whole body and not just his arm. I felt like after doing an extensive evaluation of my son which included video of him throwing before and after, recording the speeds of different pitches on the radar gun that he had already done way more than any other instructors. He then worked on mechanics and areas where my son needed improvement. All his instructions were very clear and simple, easy to understand so that we knew exactly what to work on outside of the one on one lessons (homework if you will). Honestly this is the first time in a long time I have seen my son excited again about pitching! We will definitely be booking more lessons!

Doug is a natural teacher and you see it in everything that he does. He instructs my 10 year old son and after 2 months we have seen substantial improvement in his delivery, velocity, and probably most importantly his confidence. I would recommend Doug to anyone seeking a pitching instructor.
