More About Coach Don

20 seasons coaching girls high school and club volleyball in Northern California, including 10 seasons at Delta Valley Volleyball Club. Have coached at most age levels for club volleyball (14s, 15s, 16s, 17s, and 18s). 10 Years coaching high school varsity volleyball - Varsity teams have qualified for section playoffs in eight of ten years coaching. Have coached at various camps and clinics, and have assisted at college summer camps for youth players at CSU Humbolt, CSU Stanislaus, University of the Pacific, and University of Oregon over the years. Am USA Volleyball IMPACT Certified and CAP Level II Certified coach. I am comfortable training all skills, with my specialties being passing and digging (yes, they are separate and distinct skills), and setting.

Competed in beach doubles for many years as youth player, and continued to participate in beach events and tournaments in college, as well as in college intramural events and USAF Regional/Base competitions.

Depending on player's goals, session will generally focus a step by step approach. Most volleyball skills have several component parts and most problems can be traced to one or more technical flaws in technique. Generally, a session would focus on one or two particular technique cues: instruction, demonstration, try it, feed back, try it, feedback, etc. The main benefit of individualized coaching is maximum repetitions, with a constant feedback loop to assist in adjusting and refining technique. It is not possible to provide this individualized, focused, and intense feedback and repetition in a team practice as the coaching staff''s (or single coach's) attention is necessarily divided and fragmented. One to four players per session is ideal.

Client Reviews

Thank you coach Don for all the advice and word on encouragement you've given to Angelique. We all want to see our kids succeed and you treated her like she's your own, you were very patient but tough. You covered so much over the 3 sessions we had and its amazing how my daughter showed tremendous improvement in such a short period of time. Thank you and we will let you know if she gets in to her 8th grade team :)

I booked a coaching session with Coach Don for the youngest of my three daughters. All three of my girls play volleyball so I have had experience with other private coaches. I was very pleased with the session and would rank him up there with what I consider some of the top coaches in the area. He knows his stuff. He was able to break things down and demonstrate in a manner that was easy for my daughter to understand. I know my daughter was a bit hesitant heading into the session as most of her coaches up to that point had been women and college age or just out of college. But at the end of the session she told me that Coach Don was very nice, funny and she was glad she went.

Don Shannon is a great coach and we definitely enjoyed and learned a lot in only a one hour session. My daughter had a great time, so thank you Don.

He did a great job in helping me with what I needed to work on and showing me different and better techniques to improve. I would definitely recommend Coach Don to anyone who needs help in volleyball!

Definitely knows his stuff. He helped my daughter with volleyball tryouts.

Coach Don was professional, friendly, and my girl's felt very comfortable with him. We found him to be very knowledgable regarding the game of volleyball. All the session time was used for the required purpose. I started with one daughter, but due to her positive review, I added my other daughter as well.

Both my girls play at a high level in volleyball . He was able to quickly assess their technique and was very focused on working on the specific skill's they needed. They stated it was easy to follow his instruction, and can see improvement already as they practice the technique's he has taught them.

His feedback for each session is positive, and keep's the lesson going with specific step's to practice and achieve the technique's he has taught them.

His flexibility was very helpful in lieu of our hectic schedules.

I strongly recommend him for strengthening your current skill's or if your trying to get to the next level.

We will be using his services in the future.
