More About Coach Don

I have been coaching this wonderful sport over the course of the past 5 years. I am currently USA Hockey C.E.P Level 3 certified, and I have coached all age ranges from Mite up to the collegiate club level. I began coaching in 2013 both as an assistant coach for a 14U team in Essex, VT, and a Learn to Play Program for 8U players in Stowe, VT. I relocated to the Capital Region of New York in 2014 and head coached for 2 years with the Schenectady Youth Hockey Association (10U/12U) and 1 year with the Troy Albany Youth Hockey Association (18U). During this same time span I was also the head coach for the Union College Women's Club Hockey team out of Schenectady, NY.

I played 4 years of High School Varsity for Bedford High School in Massachusetts. During my time there I was named an All-Conference All-Star my Junior and Senior years for the D3 Dual County-Merrimack Valley League. My senior year I was also recognized as the league's defensive MVP and was named a Regional All Star by the Lowell Sun which annually ranks the 15 top players across all Divisions for the DCMVL. I played Men's Club Hockey at the University of Vermont during my education there.

I am not a "one size fits all" type of coach. I believe that all players have differing needs and differing paths to learning. I adapt my lessons around the needs of the player based on this belief. As a result, my very first step is to meet with the potential player and parents/guardians (depending on the age of the player) and establish a clear set of expectations. This helps lay the ground work for what the sessions will focus on and what sort of timeframe I am dealing with. My first session will then comprise of a series of evaluation drills, adjusted to the age and skill of the player, to hone in on what the critical areas that need addressing are. I will then develop a general lesson plan for the player based on this evaluation and share it with the player/parents. Even if a player only wishes to focus on a single skill, like shooting, I will usually incorporate and encourage both on- and off-ice activities that will also benefit the player's overall development, such as resistance training for strength building. Because ice time is limited it can be difficult to schedule sessions at times. This makes it very important for the player to have drills that they can conduct on their own at home; and so I will provide those in my lesson plan as well. A typical session would be 45-60 minutes depending on ice availability and what the focus of the lesson would be.

Client Reviews

In just one session Don taught me some great fundamentals that will definitely improve my game. As a beginner adult player who has never received any training it is hard to develop good habits but he helped tremendously. I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned and will be working with Don more in the future for sure! Thanks Don!

Coach DJ, Thank you for the comprehensive "report card". I read through it with our son this evening and it was a helpful guide in explaining which areas he should continue to work on. More importantly, a big thank you for all your efforts this season. I know you faced many challenges in coaching this team and wanted to say a big thank you for continuing to remain committed to the kids. I thought you did a great job of balancing a focus on results along with the continued development of the players. The development of the team over the course of the season was exciting to see. Thanks again and have a great summer.
Hi coach! I just wanted to tell you a final "thank you!" You have seriously been such a blessing to this team and its growth. Because of you, the team has gained so much more respect and recognition from Student Activities at Union College as well as the student body overall. Thanks for sticking with us and always being passionate. Your love for the sport and our team comes through in everything that you do and say. You are a perfect fit for this team and I am so thankful for your openness and willingness to listen to and consider the needs of the team members. I respect you so much and thank you for respecting me as well. You are amazing!
