More About Coach Derrick

For the past 3 years I was Assistant Coach at ASA College (NY) for the Men's JV NJCAA D1 Program, under Head Coach Brett Wilson. My responsibilities included but we're not limited to; coordinating recruiting efforts, skill development training, player development, designing and teaching all inbounds plays, recording all stats and shot charts during games, in charge of all warmup activities, drills and exercises.

Coached for 5 Boros Basketball, an AAU program based out of Brooklyn, NY run by Rick Arson. I started the first HS team they had, I was Head Coach of the 17u Team. We played in multiple tournaments and showcases along the East Coast. I ran all practices, brought College Coaches and Scout to see my players, brought in special guest trainers and ex-pro players to teach my guys. I also assisted with my players filling out their college applications and financial aid papers, as well as providing them with other resources to help aid with tuition costs.

Coached for Abbysinian Church's Basketball Program for the past two years. I was Coach of the 14u team along with Coach Rick Lucas, I also assisted with the recruiting efforts for our HS seniors and aided in their transition to college. I was Head Player Development Coach for the entire program and ran all practices/workouts/camps for every age group 8u-18u.

Basketball has always been a joy and passion of mine since I was 5 years old. I am born and raised in Harlem, NY but I spent every summer staying with my grandma in Cleveland, Ohio until the age of 15. So my early years of playing summer basketball was in Ohio playing for multiple AAU and Travel programs. During my middle school summers I exclusively played for Coach Norman James at whatever program he was coaching for at the time. Coach James was a former pro player in the ABA back in the 70's and has been a HS/Semi Pro Coach for over 40 years.

I played HS ball for 4 years, 3 years varsity, @ St. Johns Prep in Astoria, Queens. I finished my HS career at Elmont Memorial HS in Elmont, Long Island. During the summers I played for Former Commissioner of Rucker Park, Bob McCullough and his program, CTA Challengers. We played in multiple tournaments along the East Coast. I played for M5 Elite out of Astoria, Queens under the tutelage of former Lehman College Women's Coach William Mayer.

My sessions are typically an hour long, 5pm-6pm,(sometimes longer if gym time opens up). Every minute of the workout is structured, I waste no time. Once we are in the lab, we are here to work and work hard!!

I specialize in Skill Enhancement; I utilize drills that are multi purpose and focus on more than one skill at once, really challenging the player to be on top of his craft at all times.

Game situation and IQ Training, where I teach more mental/intelligence training than physical. I believe you have to train the mind just as much and even more than the body. Throughout the workout players will continually hear me explaining every detail of the drill, why we are doing the drill, how to correctly execute the drill, what footwork is needed to execute the drill, etc.

Strength and Conditioning Training, NO WEIGHTS INVOLVED. High intensity and rep body weight exercises, structured to work on a players core strength and overall stamina and endurance.

Shooting Development Training, working on shooting shots from many angles and positions. Keying in on sharpening a players footwork gathering into their jump shot and moving without the ball. How to position their bodies thru multiple screen patterns and defensive schemes.
