More About Coach David

I have over 20 years of coaching experience ranging from 3rd-12th Grade (boys & girls). I have coached high school and junior high teams for the Illinois Attack program since 2013. Prior to 2013, I coached at Westmont High School, Westmont Park District, Wheaton Park District, Wheaton Sports Center and Illinois Basketball Academy. I am a USA Basketball Gold Licensed coach. I received my formal training from Westmont High School (John Soldwedel), Benet Academy (Bill Geist), Eastern Illinois University (Don Eddy) and DePaul University (Ray Meyer).

The 1981-82 Westmont Sentinels high school basketball season (my senior year) was truly magical for me and my teammates. I made all-conference and all-area special mention. We finished 13-0 in summer league play, 28-2 (8-0 in conference) regular season, conference champs, regional champs and sectional runner-up. Voted MVP Ray Meyers (DePaul) Basketball camp in 1979. I was a 3-year varsity starter in high school as a team captain and was recruited to play ball for D3 colleges. I started at every level thru 12th grade.

FUNdamentals-FUNdamentals-FUNdamentals! My trainees always warm-up with a basketball in hand. Training will focus on dribbling, passing and shooting (lay-ups, post moves, jump shots & free-throws) and transition into offense and defense related drills (footwork, proper defensive position, closing-out/boxing out, using & setting screens, moving without the ball, terminology/communication, etiquette & basic strength training). I believe that kids need to learn the game from the inside out. Finally, head coaches today have very little time to develop each player on their team. There is not enough time to game plan, develop team strategies and teach offensive/defensive schemes, plus give individualized attention to every single player on the team. This is why I feel that there is a great need for personal (private) trainers who can take the time to teach kids all the fundamental skills needed to play basketball.

Really appreciate you taking Kevin on as a project this season. He really enjoyed learning from you. You were very patient with him and I can’t thank you enough. We really learned how much he liked you when you were off the one week and he had a practice with another coach. (Not good! He’s a little intense). Any recommendations you can give us for future training would be appreciated! Thanks again and have a good Summer!!
