More About Coach Dave
I have coached for 20+ years. Mainly High school assistant but everything from pee wee leagues to one year as an assistant coach at Simpson University in Redding CA. I began coaching High School Boys Basketball for the Othello School District in 1988 up until 2010. A majority was Varsity assistant, JV and C Squads. In the summers I would take the Varsity Team to tournaments around the Northwest. With 6 kids of our own, I also coach a lot of Little Dribblers, Grade school and Jr High.
I worked a number of camps such as NBCamps, Boise Basketball camp and Hoops for Him in Seattle.
We moved to Redding CA in 2010 and I have coached Ministry School teams for 6 years and was Varsity assistant one year at Simpson University for the Men's program with a role on guard play, shooting and recruiting. I have also coached 3 years of Jt High Boys and Girls at Bethel Christian.
I played 3 years varsity high school basketball in Washington state. I was starting point guard and was the team captain I was recruited for college basketball but I have no college playing experience - just one year of college coaching at Simpson.
I am a high energy positive coach. I have structured timeline to work specifically with the specific strengths and weaknesses of the athlete before me. I work on both specific drills and techniques.
A workout would look like simple warm-up drills while I speak to the athlete what we will accomplish what is expected of them during the session. I then explain the drill that we work on and the reason why it will improve their basketball skills. I like to set goals, and time drills whenever possible to give a game intensity feel.
I work on drills until they get it and improve. The instruction is intense but filled with positive reinforcement for the athlete. I tie in basketball skills with life skills whenever possible.
Drills include, proper shooting,( lot's of inside one handed shooting for technique), shooting inside and out - off the dribble and catch and shoot. How to use a screen and how to screen, ball handling, passing, defense - man and help D and hedge and recover. Block out, free throws. Game situations. Lot's of shooting drills - game speed as well as game speed dribbling. Timed and amounts.
