More About Coach Darnell
This is now my second year doing Coach Up. One thing I am good at is encouragement and execution. I believe in repetition, repetition, repetition. The only way to become an outstanding athlete is to have a great work ethic, self determination, and accepting of constructive criticism. I do not have any certifications, as I have recently decided to pursue this hidden passion. I would typically want to work with 12-18 year olds who are looking to make it to the next level. I believe I have the knowledge and the know how to have your child competing on an elite level.
I was 1st team All-State in basketball in 2000. I averaged 20 ppg at Mount View High School in Welch, WV. I received Bluefield Daily Telegraph player of the week in Princeton, WV where I averaged 24 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists that particular week. I won the free throw contest at US Nationals in Huntington, WV as a junior where I hit a record 25 out of 25 free throws. My greatest joy is that my mother taught me how to shoot. I was coached by former Northfork basketball players who played for the National record holder and 8 straight state champions, Northfork Blue Demons located in Northfork, WV. I was nominated for the WV Excellence Award along with Greg Davis, and Ricky Cotrill. I was also recruited in baseball for pitching by WV State and a couple of other schools. I quit playing baseball after my junior year to focus on basketball. My junior year I hit 8 HRs in baseball.
My focus will be on shooting and creating your own shot. I have an array of shooting drills that I used to do that lead to my success as a high school standout. It is time that I pass on this knowledge that has been passed to me. It will be an intense hour, sometimes an hour and a half, twice a wk. We will work on three pointers in transition, jump shot fluidity, triple threat position, intermediate jump shooting and free throw shooting.
